avid disc with shimano hub

I am going to buy some Avid Mechs but I have read that shimano hubs will only accept shimano brakes. Will I need to replace my cheapo Shimano M475 hubs and be further out of pocket?

It depends.

Your hubs have a 6 bolt pattern for a rotor to bolt to? If so, you are ok. XT and XTR hubs are available in a splined interface for a specific rotor, but that does not involve you.

I have Shimano XT and it worked fine with my Avid mech.

You can use them....

My Giant Warp (stock now) has the same combo. It works.

I recommend you to upgrade your front hub (as late as the working one dies) to an XT as these 475's like to bend it's axle and do not have dust covers. Keep an eye when you wash your bike for water do not enter the hubs and lube them regularly.

The 475's are a downgraded version of the Deore's 515 hubs. They're almost equal but they do not have dust covers (and can not be installed). It's an OEM version I guess.
