so im sittin her considerin my options. i have this wonderful hope big un front hub all laced up to a wicked hot old school 521 wheelset but the spacing is fubar. its a 95mm width and i now need a 110. its easy to relace or repurchase a wheelset but how cool would it be to make some proper spacers or inserts for the hub since hope isnt interested anymore?

anyone feel like tackeling this job to help out a old man in his time of need? heres 2 shots of the skinny hub from a moto 120 now fitted to a 66 rc. notice the black gaps hetween the hub fittings and the fork dropouts. thats the 20mm axle. its not that i dont like the new stuff, i do. its just that i kinda dig these and cash is low for now. i have calipers and micrometers and i will pay a reasonable price. some help would make my day.

Interesting...so does the hub slide back and forth on that axle? Do you have some dimensions for what you want machined up?

I have access to a machine shop at work...if you know what you want and the material you want it made of...I might be able to do it. It would be a week or two before I can get to it however. I am not a machinist but what are proposing seems easy enough for this engineer/ "armchair machinist" :).
Or you could just get some spacers from white brothers. Their DH forks are set at 120mm spacing, so they make spacers if you run a regular hub and redish your wheel.
I'm totally insulted; you misspelled "machinist". As a machinist, and an anal retentive speller, I am twice insulted.
:D
CC,, we're talking about a simple job here. I'm knee deep in work related work right now, but I'll p.m. you later and we'll talk.

That's not a mis-spelling - that's what we call an "Ol' CactusCooterism" - yeppers ;)
my spelling is about as good as my riding. what does that tell ya? thanx guys. ill wait to hear back from some of ya. looks to me like 2 alloy 7.5mm spacers, 20mm id and about 2mm od will fix this up. would be really cool to make some hub inserts that are 7.5mm longer on the axle but thats a much bigger job than some simple spacers. these are the last bits i need to ride it. if i could do this for $20 or so it might be worth it. otherwise im tempted to get a set of king earl wheels and call it done but i really cant swing em right now.
I'm sure you could find a seatpost with the right ID and get a pipe cutter. Maybe find a piece from a bike shop?
Don't mean to hijack the thread, however, I wanna make a cheap single speed conversion spacer kit for the rear. Does anyone have any idea what the ID of the spacer needs to be in order to fit over the hub shell?

About the same ID as cassette spacers you can buy a handful of at a bike shop. :D

Ask or look around on the SS forum here. There are some FAQs and some useful setup resources there.

Nevermind

its fixed! after tellin me the parts were no longer made and unavailable, hope did indeed send the parts, well kinda. i got a package with some 20mm front hub bits today. odus tried to eat them but other than the padded envelope, he was greatly unsuccessfull. the bearings, internal preload spacer and offset axel spacers were untouched. trouble was they were also the wrong shite.

the od of the bearings was obviously too small so i retained the originals. the short spacers i was replacing were press fit into the original bearings and preload spacer so when they were pushed out it was also obvious the ones they sent that simply butted up against the bearings wernt gonna work as they left a huge gap between the larger bearing id and the axle but i was not to be denied on this night.

so i cut the old spacers in half, leaving just the stepped down insertion part. this took some time as all i had was a old, dull hacksaw blade and all the stores were closed. oh well it kept me warm anyhow. so now i clean up the edges with a file or 2 and push these modified internal spacers back into the bearings to support the axle (some green locktite will be needed to hold them in place and some mods to the length of the new 20mm preload spacer to fit between them must be performed), add the 2 new black offset spacers and in done! WRONG! all kinds of rotor to caliper adaptor missallignment.

so i add some spacers and washers here. easy enough to do so now its done! WRONG AGAIN! the bolts are now too short. no worries. some h/set cap bolts will do the trick and fix it all up right? WRONG AGAIN CHIEF! too long now so its back into the washer bottle to close the gap. a thin washer and 2 hayes caliper mounting washers on each one nixes that little issue. so its finally done! JUST FRIGGIN KILL ME NOW! oh how the rotor bolts and the rotor itself rub on the adaptor now. but hey, im a resorcefull and clever old man and i own a file or 2. remember?

ok, ok........ so theres a little brake rub due to hopes extra thick rotor but its hardly noticeable and this wont be my full time wheelset. by spring and the race season i should have more current round, rolly bits. it rides kinda cool out in the falling snow too! i looked for some stuff to get up on top of and fall back down from, i think you guys call em jumps and drops, but like odus, i was greatly unsuccessfull. just too much snow and too little traction. tomorrow i go skiing to calm my need for play. thanx to you machinists (sp?) for all the help but i think this will suffice till i get the new wheels. cheese would be proud of me.

just checked my invoice. those #&@$*%'s charged me $13.00 for the wrong conversion kit and $14.00 for the mis-sized bearings that i didnt order and thats cost! got me for another $7.00 in shipping for a 1/2 lb bag. like i wasnt dissapopinted in hope c.s. before now. gotta admit, great products though. damn shame they suffer from nural fecees syndrome.
Step up and watch the Cactus Show!

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Please grab a seat and be prepared to be entertained by the one and only: Our very own, Old Coot, CactusCORN!

Damn dude, I am going a bit crazy waiting these last few weeks to build up the new bike. Its a Burner frame bought LAST Christmas! Its been sitting at my Dads place in MI while I have been over in Europe all year. Its been hard to watch you build up your third bike while waiting but I have to say, lately I am getting a lot of laughs from your posts. That last one about the shipping charges was hilarious to me for some reason. Thanks for helping me pass the time! :D

Just a few more weeks and she will be all built up! :( :) :D
im stoked for ya buddy! its gonna be a good day. be sure to tell us all about it when shes ambulatory. and im glad i could give ya a chuckle or 2. i tell it like im fuming but in reality, its no big deal. frustrating, sure but im just happy to have it done. and what else are we gonna do at this hour in the usa when the endorphins are poppin like like a street junkie with a handfull of black beauties and nowhere to go? we post.
For me its early AM!!!!

Cactus,
Im in Prague and just got to work a little over an hour ago. Its 1030 AM here....I get to see all the goofy late night hijinks when I first come to work and am looking for my coffee. I need at least an hour or so here on MTBR and a coffee or two before I do anything productive.

Thanks for starting my day off in a good way, and dont worry. I will have lots of pics (soon)

And now back to our regularly scheduled "clown crap..."

Cheers
Chris
