Hi All,

Building a new set of wheels
-These will be my every day and race wheels (2x a week off road, less than 7 races a year)
-135lbs
-Vbrakes
-32hole hub (GT-Hadley)
-XC racing - rocky/rooty XC riding
-steel hardtail
-2x Wheelsmith XL14 on non-drive side, 3x Wheelsmith DB14 drive side

Looking at Mavic x517 and velocity synergy. The rear Synergy is asymetrical with an offset spoke bed of 4.

do you think for my weight and type of riding that I'd want to consider an asymmetrical rear rim ?

For your weight and usage, I'd consider the asym feature as nice to have but not necessary. I have an asym rim on my WTB LaserDisc Lite / Marwi Ti wheel, but that is only due to the high tension requirements of the ti spokes. I run regular rims on all the rest of my wheels and haven't had any probs at 155lbs.
