Asheville?

I'm currently living up here in the DC/Metro area :madman: yes its bad. I'm toying with the idea of moving next year. I'm single and the only thing holding me here is a Job with the county. I've visited Asheville before but never looked into Jobs or Apartments/houses before. Is the economy as bad down there as it is up here? Stupid question I know. Assuming all works out I'd like to be out of here by the end of next year.

Would I be better off looking at Charlotte for jobs? Bigger city? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks Chris:thumbsup:

jobs: none; housing:eek:verpriced and always rat-infested; the economy: getting uglier every day. those of us in asheville wish we could move to charlotte - or d.c., for that matter - but our slum has robbed us of any will to live. i suggest staying up north or, if you must move to our state, check out charlotte for sure!
Haha. I like the sarcasm. I lived in Southern Mississippi for awhile I think I can manage. Nice shot though.
Greenville is your best bet for staying closer to the mountains but actually landing a job. You are only 45 minutes to Dupont, etc. The weather is also a few degrees warmer in the winter.
All sarcasm aside, I moved to Asheville WITH a job and I wouldn't have done it differently. When my wife moved here she blew through her savings, never found a job in her field, worked at a restaurant, got a degree in another career field, and is now searching for a different job.

Housing isn't too bad, but there are a lot of overpriced dumps, of course.

If you don't mind working for relatively low wages and living with a roommate then you'll find there's no place better than Asheville. The mountains, the music scene, the beer scene.... it rocks here.
I agree that either having a job or being in a high-demand field is key.
Do you work in health care? You can find a job, probably.
I work in the mental health/ social work field- because it's work a lot of people don't want to do for the relatively low $, no problem for me.
People in tech, industury, sales, etc are going to have harder time.

Regarding housing: Compared to the DC/Metro area, it'll likely seem dirt cheap. But, the difference is wages vs. cost of living. Wages, in general, do not equal cost of living here.
Yea. I'm 26 and single. No college degree. I'm working for the county government up here and don't really want to give this job up at this time. With the economy being in the shitter and all. Thanks for the advice. See what happens down the road. Asheville or Ft.Collins is my dream town.
best of luck finding work and housing. asheville is wonderful - so much so that it's hard to share our town with others - hence my sarcasm. kind of suprised to learn you fancy ft. collins as much as asheville, though. i would rank ft. collins somewhere after my top 10 colorado towns (durango, oury, telluride, breck, aspen, vail, nederland, silverton, fruita and delores all rank ahead of ft. fun), though each would be tough to find work and affordable housing in. there is an expression in asheville - and the aforementioned colorado towns, for that matter - "the only way to make a million dollars here is to show up with two million." again: best wishes in finding your sweet spot in our sweet country. merry/happy, brother!

Well out of those two as picks Asheville is the much easier town to survive on little income. Ft. Collins...cool place but economy for someone without a degree :yikes:
Good luck though, either way. Unfortunately that whole having to pay bills and stuff sucks
Maybe you should check Hendersonville for a rich old sugar mama
