would say I heard it but I read about rides that were referred to spring fling rides on a few social media outlets.
As a previous MTBR AZ Spring Fling organizer, I have to say that this event has always been a Labor of Love. I was a wreck the year I was in charge and lost a few friends to power struggles and silly assumptions. But I kept volunteering year after year as ride leader or party organizer. It all came to head when some 80 people (okay, maybe it was only 50) showed up for my posted
DURTGURL Sedona ride, maybe late 2000s. I tried to split it up into groups on the spot, but no one would take leadership. That, my MTBR pals, was the end of my Spring Fling enthusiasm. Thankfully Chad did a fine job for several years in a row. But for Spring Fling to continue, someone must step up and take ownership. That did not happen this year, so no Spring Fling.
As for this year's "private" Spring Flingers, my Ohio friends came to visit last week even tho there was no official MTBR Spring Fling. I called their visit "AZ Spring Fling" on FaceBook, in jest. I even took the whole week off from work and meant to post up rides on AZMTBR as the Ohio boys and I decided what to do in hopes that other MTBRers might join. But then I got a raging yeast infection (TMI? so so sorry), had a horrible reaction to OTC meds, and was off the bike moaning in self pity the entire week. So even my Private AZSpringFling was a bust. Maybe someone will step up and take ownership next year, but most likely not. Things change, people move on, nothing stays the same forever.
