Hi all,

I don't know about you but while NW chainrings are mostly OK riding SS, non-NW rings just seem that touch quieter and shed mud better.

So....

Can you still buy non-NW, SRAM direct mount chainrings?

I can only really find the MRP bling rings and I think they have been discontinued so availability is tricky.

Other option I have run in the past is a 104bcd spider and then 104bcd ring but lets be honest- spiderless looks good :)

Any ideas then on non-NW SRAM direct mount chainrings?

Ta!

I may be off-base, but I would think the bigger issue with noise is the taller tooth profile of 1x chainrings. I'd imagine you'd be hard-pressed to find a direct-mount ring with a traditional tooth-profile (for a single-speed or fixed-gear specific chainring).

The height is a good point. A few years ago there were quite a few options but as you say a traditional tooth profile direct mount ring is a bit niche now.

I think ethirteen did some, maybe Blackspire too??? I am struggling to find them now

The post above might be a joke... but I have done that before in order to use a half link. A lathe was helpful to keep the chainring spinning and ensure even material removal from each tooth, but it worked great!

No joke! I've never tried it but it seems simple enough to shave off the wide teeth. Maybe even trim down the tops a little bit if it's too tall. 👍

I haven't been aware of any DM non-NW rings in years. I'd even be happy with a 104bcd option but can't think of any of those at the moment either. I'd LOVE to have a non-NW Shimano 96bcd option in 33t, but good luck finding that. Also could it be an oval? TIA ;)

Last time I needed something that didn't exist I reached out to a bunch of manufacturers to see who would make something for me, Garbaruk ended up doing a great job for me, gave me exactly what I wanted, did it in a reasonable timeframe, and it didn't cost an arm and a leg. I'd reach out to them if you decide to have something made.

(This was pre-covid, I've noticed in the past two years most companies are too busy and less interested in doing custom one-off projects, but you never know until you ask.)

Can use a 1/8" chain and a half link, if desired.

I used a pintle chain on my last change. Noisy bugger, wouldn't recommend for regular riding. It did soak up getting dragged across a piece of concrete on the trail with aplomb, though.

Custom is my backup plan. There used to be a few making one off parts as well as the bigger companies so I will potentially give them a go.

Non-NW 104bcd rings off the top of my head readily available would be Blackspire Mono Veloce, Velosolo, Renthal SR4, Surly steel... but yes not a ton of options at all which is really frustrating. NW rings are mostly ok but a normal tooth profile ring for SS is just that little bit better IMO

Did they ever make them? Is direct mounting compatible with a 2x system? If not, I would see no reason for them to even consider making a non-normal wide option.
