the little threaded cap on the outside edge of the axle fell off, nowhere to be found. the cage didn't come off since there's a screw holding part of the cage loosely in place. i've got another older pair that i was gonna take that cap off, but i couldn't figure out how to do it.

the pedal is very loose w/o the cap on. anyone fix this before?

Check the shimano website, they have exploded diagrams for most of their pedals. It is more difficult finding a LBS that stocks the parts, or will order them for you. You might also want to check the prices for replacement parts, and then decide whether to buy a used donor set, or new pedals if the replacement parts are too expensive.
