I have a new bike and decided to go with the disc brakes this time. After a few salty rides, I'm getting some scratching noise around brakes, and some squeeking. I know no very little about maintaining regular brakes let alone disc brakes. Are the disc brakes hard to clean, and should have I went with the regular brakes instead of the disc?

Do you have the set-up/installation instructions? If not, check them out on the Shimano site (here's a link to the PDF) and make sure they are correctly set up.
Mechanical disc brakes typically require a similar level of maintenance to V-brakes, as they fundamentally similar. Typically, hydraulic disc brakes require less maintenance, if only because they are self-adjusting.
