Are avid disc mech's front and rear specific?

Hey guys,

Hoping for some info. I'm looking to purchase some avid disc mech's which the seller states are rear specific. I am looking to run these on the front however. The avid website mentions a rotor spacing difference between front and rear brakes.

What I'm basically asking is can these rear specific brakes be used on my fork? Are there even rear specific Avid mech discs?

Any info would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

clarification - front/rear specific bracket

Just to add, gauging from the Avid website, it appears that the only difference is the bracket for mounting to the front or rear. Is this correct? Can Avid or my LBS provide me with the correct bracket?

Thanks again

The Avid calipers and rotors are identical. It's just a different adapter for the front IS mount. For Manitou_Post Mount, you don't need an adapter at all. Adapters are $10-$15 or so.

Who sales the adapters?
The other thing I'm told is that a rear mounted bracket run on the front will accomodate an extra inch of rotr... ie, if you're buying a 6 inch, you can use it to run a 7 inch rotor up front with the existing bracket.

Granted, if you're buying a new bracket anyway, you could do it that way, too.

But there are no 6" or 7" Avid rotors. They are 160 mm (6.3") and 185 mm (7.29"). A 160 mm rear mount does not work with a 185 mm rotor on the front (I have tried it).

With the v.1 caliper that used 165 mm rotors you could use a front mount on the rear with a 140 mm rotor or, with slight modifications, a 180 mm rotor on the front with a rear mount.

OT: So Shig, are you saying that a front 160 *won't* work with a rear 140? I haven't tried it but assumed it was a given with any IS-compliant brake caliper.

The v.1 and v.2 calipers use the same mounts for the smaller rotors (160/165 mm). There is a minor difference in the caliper spacing so the v.2 caliper may not work without additional spacers in this case.

All I'm getting at Shiggy is that it stands to reason (or so I thought) that if a 160 Hope mini IS fits a 140 rear, the Avid would do the same. Are you saying the *current caliper* won't fit a 140 rear using a front 160 adapter?

That is my understanding.
Yes it will

It will work. I've run the front 160mm current model mount on the rear with a Formula 140mm rotor on my race NRS while I was deciding what to do with my B4SLs last winter.
