The typical person's metatarsal arch is 15 degrees. Mine is 30 degrees. It's like an ape. My podiatrist actually made fun of it and cracked some pretty good jokes at my expense. It was awesome.

I ride flats with Five Ten freeriders on a hard tail. After a day on rocky trails my arches hurt pretty badly at times. Years ago I had some custom inserts made, but those are long gone.

Anyone else suffer from this, and what are the options? The obvious one is another set of custom insoles. Outside of that, is there anything else I can do to help support my ridiculous arch and prevent injury?

I like Spenco's Total Support Original insole for several reasons: 1) It has a deep heel pocket and not too much volume so I don't feel like my heels are popping out of the shoe; 2) It provides good arch support without being too invasive for my totally flat feet . (A lot of people think that an arch support has to be completely rigid to be effective, but I disagree. For me, too much arch support not only hurts but actually causes me to supinate. The shoe upper itself will add some support to the arch support.); 3) It has a very comfortable metatarsal pad similar to the ones on specialized insoles; and 4) It comes in both the original and thin models and both are very light. The thin model will most likely be best for the majority of riders and their cycling shoes, but I have an extremely narrow foot.

Put your arch support in an Adidas Terrex Boost trailrunning shoe. The BASF midsole looks like styrofoam. It isolates you from rock and root induced vibration better than gel or EVA. It never get compressed. So it outlasts the uppers. Lnk. You can them with Gortex and as boots. They have 30% off sales periodically.

I use the thinnest versions of the sof sole insoles which are heat moldable which works well for me. I've also used various versions of Superfeet. Lots of insole brands out there, go try a few out at a place like REI and see what helps!
