Pisgah is one of those must ride places. It isn't that far from here, but I almost never go. I like to think that I'm just too busy, that getting a weekend pass is too hard, or that my bike isn't set up for it. But the real reason is that mountains are unforgiving and I usually ride alone. The cost of ****upage is higher than I'm willing to pay. Sometimes you've got to take a little risk though. Just to feel alive.

That is one of my favorite loops of trail in Pisgah Laurel Mountain / Pilot Rock and then the inner loop of Pilot Cove is just icing on the cake!
Give me a shout if need someone to ride with. I try to get up there as much as i can!

I rode that loop last year, such a nice ride. Didn't have any snow though

Since I was out there alone, I'd call my gf from the trailhead and leave a message containing all of the trails I planned on riding, and an estimated time of completion, and then called her again when I finished. Probably wouldn't really have helped, but it gave me some peace of mind, which enabled me to sit on the same rock and appreciate the view..

I am headed up to Pisgah with some friends for the first time the second week of May. I would love to know more about this loop. Where is the trailhead? What directions? Exactly what trails, etc. We are coming up from ATL on a Thursday morning and wanted to do a good ride in Pisgah that day. I think we are doing Dupont on Friday. Thanks for any advice...

Easiest is from I26 you want exit 40 (Airport) Hwy280 south towards Brevard couple miles you want to turn right at light just past hwy191...you'll See sign For North Mills River area , Follow road couple of miles go through N. Mills Campground the pavement ends and become Forest Service road 1206 climb climb to Road Closed Gate... Ride 1/8 mile first Trail head on right Laurel Mtn...See Map Red is climbin' ...Green is Rockin' Downhill you'll have to climb the road out....added miles since the roads closed!

Thrift Cove/ Black Mountain - the trail head is right across from the Davidson River campground Black Mtn is an awesome downhill and in really good shape. You should go Counter clock for best effect!

head up 276 and turn left into the Hatchery park ... Head up 475b Climb climb climb take the left road think its 225? climb a little at the peak you'll see the old entrance to Caney Bottom trail on left Large Boulders blocking trail. stay on 225 down to the next left Cove creek trail and take junct to right and enjoy! once you get to the bottom grassy field take road down to 475 juct go left then right down Davidson River Trail down to Hatchery!

to do LaurelMtn from Davidson river u can go up 276 past Pink Beds and the Cradel of Forestry and hit 1206 on the right follow that till the road ends....There are several sections of road that washed away last year from the hurricanes. so on that map you'd be coming from the left side.

Recommend one or both these guide books they both have some great listed trails and have come in handy in more than one occassion. you can get em at Sycamore Cycles or Backcountry Outdoors right outside the Main Pisgah gate.

Just flew back to Denver from a long weekend trip to Ashville, Pisgah and the Brasstown Bald stage of the TdG. The first ride I did with my buddy from Asheville was Laurel Mountain, Pilot Rock, Pilot Cove and then we pushed our bikes back up the ridge to Laurel Mtn via the unnamed connector trail so we could ride back down Laurel Mtn. -- great stuff.

I bought the Parham book already. Just wanted to hear from someone that rides up there what the "best" rides are when you only have 2 or 3 days. Thank you very much for the info...

DuPont is an option, too

DuPont State Forest is right on the other side of Brevard, and if you have the time and inclination, I recommend to Corn Mill Shoals Trail, both for the ride, and the scenery/waterfalls.

DuPont is nice but doesn't compare to trails like Laurel Mtn....Plus the Nice thing about Most Pisgah Trails Rarely do you come across other people and when and if you do they're feeling the same pain you are climbin' and lovin it!... and especially Horses! too many horses around DuPont! on a rare occasion will we some across horses and its usually on the Squirrel Gap and Cantrell Creek South Mills area trials.

I dunno brado, I kinda dig the eastern slickrock loop. There's just something about unlimited traction. Tie that in with the trails on the other side of cornmill shoals and you can have a really nice day. I sort of think of Dupont and Pisgah as just plain different. Not competing so much as dependent on your mood.

As I mentioned in a PM to you via the SORBA board, I was thinking about comming up that weekend. I am now for sure going to be at Davidson that same thurs - sun and will more than happy to show you the Laurel Mtn route and how to get there etc. If ya'll want slickrock on Fri that's fine too, I know those trails as well.

I guess one of these summers I could take a vacation "a little closer". I wish I could have done it, there is a bunch from the area down south now.
