I'm trying to size an Epiphany but the Standover and BB heights are in code...anyone have the key?

My "guess" is that you add 13", 1/2 of the wheel width to get the right info. But that, then, does not account for the width of a tire on the rim. Obviously, BB height and standover are "variables".

if you apply those calculations to the specs of the other bikes and compare their looks, you get quite a difference in their geometry, though it must work, but that gives the epiphany a very high standover, especially the 15"

Paul might be able to better verify the specs. It seems that what was published in the catalog was very "raw" in order to get copy out before Interbike. Real world numbers are probably different.

Maybe some of these folks with new frames can confirm.

I think the bottom bracket height is 1/2" above the line drawn between the front and rear axles, it's a measurement i've seen other manuf. use and is not peculiar to Ells. Ofcourse that would depend on the tyres fitted.

I can't see it being more than 13.5"- probably be less.Most people don't want a tall bottom bracket and they got some stick in the past for the Id.

If i remember right my Moment was 13.5" when i had a Vanilla 130 fork on it with Conti vertical 2.3 tyres ( which run on the small side ) and it's not likely to be taller than that.

Hope this helps although i can't be of any use with the standover measurement, but going off the photo's it looks like they've got it as low as they reasonably can so i wouldn't worry about either measurement personally- should be a great ride and if i hadn't just got a Blur LT ( which is just amazing BTW ) then i'd probably be looking at one too. Look forward to seeing some pics.

From Ellsworth's 2006 catalog (lower right of same page as the specs):

"All specs use the axel horizon line as reference
when dealing with bottom bracket height and
standover. (specs are (+/-) from this line.)"

In other words, plus 13" for wheel plus whatever for your tires.

e.g. a standover height on a 17" frame of 30.9" + tire height

The Key is...

Assuming your wheels, with tires, measure a true 26" diameter, take the radius(13") and add it to the BB rise. So, BB height for the Epiphany would be 13.5".

If you're rolling fatties, your tire diameter may easily be greater than 26", which raises your BB a bit. I have a wheel set with semislick Kenda Klimax tires that measures 25.5" in dia, which would drop the BB to 13.25". The point being, wheel dia is a variable.

Standover works the same. Add the tire radius to the standover number in the catalog. Standover in the catalog was measured 7"(175mm) horizontally forward from the BB center. That's more forward than Ellsworth measured Standover in the past.

Thanks...that is one big bike, sad that Mrs. JM has such short legs...perhaps Ellsworth would consider a 13" version for the girls?

The standover seems all wrong. It seems that the standover on the Epiphany is taller than the Id, which does not seem right since the top tube slops more. Just my 2 cents.

Ellsworth is creating some confusion with their use of the "horizon measurement" I guess they are trying to be technical about it and show the world they have some engineering background ("we must be accurate!!!"). They don't realize that the number they post will vary depending on the fork's A-C height too. Of course they took that into consideration; not!!!

To make things worst, they won't even reply to posts like these. I've asked Mr. Psick about it on another post which he just ignored. So much for their great CS...
