They are 30 bucks on Ebay. Are they total crap? Has anyone used one?

I'm spoiled by my shop stands and my pedro's portable, but it looks like a decent stand for the money. not sure how well it would work if you pull your bb or other jobs that required you to really torque on the bike

I've got one. Not ideal, but it works.

If you really need to crank on something like a stuck BB, it's better to take it off the stand.

Ortherwise, it works just fine.

Better than leaning against the wall. They can tip though. Might not have enough support for the 29" wheels

Better then nothing. Performance sells a similar one. I used one for a while and had my bike regularly fall off. One time the bike hit me in the bicep and gave me a massive bruise. Prolly thin metal and cheesy welds. Buy something better and weld the base of it to an old plow disc or something similar (flat on at least one side) and heavy.

That said, I've been thinking about buying a good workstand....what is the best and what is the best bang for bucks?

Best bang for the buck? Well, I recently made something like this bike stand:

Looks kind of like this:

Cost me $12 for the 3/4 inch pipe clamp, and less than $10 for a 3/4 inch base flange, one 3/4" x 18" long pipe, 3/4 x 12" pipe, and a 3/4 inch elbow, and maybe $1.50 in bolts and nuts to bolt it to my work bench. Unlike the one on the website above that hangs from the ceiling, mine is bolted onto my garage work bench, right next to my bench vise. you'll need a drill with a 1" hole saw or spade bit. Maybe 30 minutes to one hour of shop time drilling holes and putting it together, and viola', you have an excellent work stand for under $25. When I don't want it on my work benck, I just unscrew it from the base (which is through bolted to the bench). Works perfectly.

I've got an Ultimate folding bike stand in my garage. It works great, but it is pricey and not real compact. If you want something cheap and portable, you might try this:

It works pretty well. It was my only bike stand for years. I used it in my apartment while sitting on the floor. I keep it in my car now just in case I need to fix something at the trailhead.
