Anybody use a 30.9 carbon post on an NRS?

1245 Views 8 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  dirt diggler
I recently posted another message about the use of a 30.9 seatpost on NRS frames and now have a follow-up question. Is anybody using a 30.9 CARBON seatpost on their NRS? I found a *sweet* deal on a Syncros 30.9 carbon post but I want to make sure that it will work Ok in my frame.

Size shouldn't be the issue. My only concern is if the seat tube is smooth enough inside to avoid scoring the carbon post. But I guess that would be an issue with an Al post as well (you're not supposed to score ANY seatpost, regardless of material).

Thx...Doug

Yup.Been on one of those same posts for about 6-7 weeks now. Not one slip or otherwise problem. Good post. Suggest not grabbing the saddle to position or withdraw out of the ST. Sorta tight fit, but no biggie. This puts undo stress on the carbon/seat rail assembly junction. Grab the post itself.

Bet mine came from the same place. $39.95

Your deal is better than mine!

$39.95?? That's a better price than I have found ($49.95). Where did you get your post?

Thx...Doug
Edit**

Ebay. But, the powerseller that was selling it, had the same post listed a few different times(all had overlapping end dates)for $49 and even $59. He might have "fixed" the inconsistant pricing. I just took advantage is all. My main email system just took a big dunk, so I've lost all my inbasket stuff, meaning I've lost my link to the end sale stuff. This has been discussed over at the weight board a couple of times. Thats where I was clued in on the deal to begin with.

Edit part** heres the link. found it after doing a search

How do you like the post so far?

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately that sale is over now, and the $49 price I found is from the same guy. So the best deal I can get is $49, which is still one helluva deal.

How do you like the post so far? Right now I have a Sette 27.2 carbon post and I like a lot, but the damn thing just keeps on slipping inside the shim. I am sick of that shim and will do whatever I can to get rid of it, and that's why I want a 30.9 post.

How is the Syncros constructed? Did they put anything in the post itself to avoid crushing or cracking? One nice feature of the Sette post is they glued small aluminum rings inside the post in the area where it would be clamped on the bike. I'm sure the idea was to give the carbon added strength against being crushed by the seat clamp. I don't know if this really works or not, but given that I have done some gnarly stuff with that post without damage, it must be helping somewhat.

Does the post have measurements on it (for the insertion level)?

Thx...Doug

Agree, still a good price for sure.

No alum rings, but my other rides USE Alien carbon has none either. It slipped like hell 2.5yrs ago for about 3 rides, then it stopped never to slip again. It too uses the oem shim.

Syncros seems built reasonably well. Shows about 212gms on my scale. Replaced a cut down Thomson 30.8(385mm from 410). FWIW, the Syncros has never ever slipped from day one.

Hmm...seatpost length could be an issue

Hi Duckman -

Is the Syncros EXACTLY 350mm as advertised? Here's the issue - my current seatpost sticks exactly 8" out of the seat tube (as measured from the top of the seat tube to the bottom of the chrome seat clamp). 8" = 203.2mm. If Giant wants 150mm minimum insertion then I'm going to be a bit short (146mm).

My other options are to (a) find a 30.9 post in a 400mm length, or (b) screw around with the shim to see if I can stop the slippage issues. Somebody told me about a trick where you can cut a strip of aluminum from a beer can, wrap it around the shim (so it is between the shim and seat tube), and then re-tighten. Pricepoint also sells a 27.2/30.9 shim made by US Alien that is supposed to be meant for a carbon post. I wonder if that would work.

I really hate that goddam shim!

Thx...Doug

Heck I guess. I'd rather not pull that badboy out to measure it, since its a tight fit and all. How much diff can 4mm(less then a 5th of an inch)make? I run alot of post on my blue M frame(the USE post is even with the bottom of the shim), but the black L frame is where I can run the 30.9x350mm, since I easily have tons of overlap.
The USE shim(composite) is better. Much lighter then the relatively heavy oem shim(alum). I remember cleaning the shim on both sides with degreaser..as did the post, and doing a crosshatch with fine sandpaper to the USE post, sorta like a cylinder hone finish. Never slipped again.
doug,
i run a syncros 30.9 x 440mm seatpost on my nrs with no slipping.
