Is it not a zoo on w-ends? I guess to early still for that to happen.
Stoked where do you leave from?
gumby-

yes, it is a zoo on weekends. that's why bobw and i are talking about going up to windham (20 minutes further). if you need a ride or something let me know and we might be able to work something out. it would be good to meet you finally.

Sounds good Phat. We were thinking of going to Hunter on sunday but open to suggestions and saturday as well. We might also go Friday(12/9) if they get some snow.
sunday is looking like the better day for me. i spoke to bobw and windham looks like the place. it would be great if you could go.

Phat, would love to hook up. Isn't windham kind of flat? Not been but....
Actually I would be happy doing anything if I can swing it.
I will be in contact.
gumby- i actually prefer windham to hunter. i don't think it's flat at all but what i really like about it is that it's much less crowded on the weekends.

HEY Phat, Windham is pretty flat for a two hour drive....ever think about elk mountain in Pa. I heard its pretty close to hunter as far as vertical....And as long as you mention mountain biking (which I just did) its okay to talk skiing in this forum

I could give Gumby a ride , no problem there.

Gumby Just jump on the path train and I am 5 min from it on Journal Sq stop.

I never been to Elk mtn , but Windham is kind of Flat but what ever you guys decide is OK since 1st ride of the season. Hunter is definetely a zoo on weekends but makes you a better rider, avoiding people and try not to get hit ;) Just go so fast that your eyes tear w/goggles on.

Edit .
I looked up elkskiers.com and vertical drop is 1000ft same as creek and not open till Thursday, which means only few trails will be open by Sunday. my vote is for Zoo Hunta or Windham.

I have not been to Elk. Boy, I did not realize that we had such and extream gourp here to call Windham flat (1600 vert)! ;) If everyone would like to check out Elk (1000 vert) that will work with me. We need to decide shortly. I have two other folks from Mid-NY that may come out. Or how about Montage (1000)?

Better check their websites!

Looks like Elk doesn't open till Thursday with maybe 4 trails. Winham has 11 trails open now. Windham might be the better bet.

Elk is a nice mountain, family and friendly like Windham. A few more black diamonds but not any longer runs than Windham. As I recall its a little smaller than Windham.

I would love to go with you guys, but I tweaked my knee and don't think it will be ready for riding :( . I'll check back if I have a sudden recovery.

Here are the websites:

It's true. I don't know any of the hills here. Since moving to the US of A nearly 2 yrs ago I have only clocked up a killington trip and my wednesday hunter bus trips.

Just checked the elk sight, they open thursday, hard to tell what will be on offer.
I also need to work out how I am going to get there and if it's possible? so my vote may not count

Where ever has the most terrain open with decent coverage and no crowds.....
Does that exist??

I would love to play water polo with all of you but I will be racing in the snow in Providence for cyclocross nationals. Hopefully you all will be playing water polo on a different weekend.

Windham????

In my humble opinion Windham gets as crowded as Hunter and is far worse at handling the crowds. Plus the terrain at Windham is pretty mellow. I've been at Hunter every weekend since opening and it has not gotten very crowded yet. Although with the great conditions and consumer demo weekend this weekend who knows?

If you're looking for a decent alternative to Hunter in the catskills I'd go to Belleayre.

How about Shawnee, Poconos I think its only an 1 hour and 30 minutes from the city. I even think they have a half pipe there. Probaly a small of mountain but its close.
