I just ordered some new SRAM SX4 components (rear derailleur and trigger shifters) for a commuter bike I am building up. I know this is cheap stuff, but I wouldn't want anything too bling for a bike that is getting locked up on campus.

I was fairly impressed with how the pictures of this stuff looked. The SX5 derailleur looks a lot like the X9 and the SX4 similar to the X7. I figure the best way to find out how this stuff is would be to try it myself. It was cheap enough anyway, especially since I work at a shop. The prices are pretty comparable with Shimano Alivio (should retail for a couple bucks less) and I have never had any problem with Alivio stuff.

So, has anybody seen any of this stuff in person?

I have a x5, x7 and x9 the 5 works ok, but is nothing like an x9. The x9 is alot smoother in shifting and shifts better under loads. There is really no comparison between them in terms of performence. For commuting I would think a x5 would suit you fine. However, not sure where you planning on betting the x5 for and for how much. The x7 is also nice but the x9 is still getter. For the price I would go get a x7 if it is not that much more money than the x5. The have them at jensonhttp ://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/RD706A00-Sram+X7+Rear+Derailleur.aspx for 39 dollars.
