Here's a quote from a trail reviewer on www.socalmtb.com..."Middle Merrill is in great shape and is lots of fun right now. The scarey, exposed right hand turn 2/3 of the way down has been sanitized for your protection (I guess?) and doesn't exist anymore. Seriously, it's like they just zapped it away. Sunset is in it's usual good shape despite the rain."

I just don't understand the logic of removing embedded rocks, obstacles on our local trails. I've seen riders in warp speeds out on local trails which are 2-3' wide and a potential collision is just around the corner in these multi-use trails. I swear, our local single track trails now immitate a miniature golf course w/ speed demon racers.

Anyone else make the same observation? Okay, I'll stop whining now.

Is bull, people want flat, smoth non paved trails

for what ever reason they feel all extreme because they are riding on the dirt as long is all nice and smooth. Thats one of the reason I love the courses in mexico, all hardcore.

I'm lucky to have a trail within a half-hour drive that was built to be challenging.

Last summer, I worked with one of the guys who laid out the trails at Blue Mound WI. I was explaining my theory about how to get through the rock gardens: "I think that you gain something by trying to keep the bike pointed straight down the trail, rather than trying to pick the smoothest line around the rocks."

He replied: "Your mistake is you are still thinking like a road biker. We laid these trails out on purpose so that you *have* to go over the rocks."

End result: a really fun summer on the bike.

in Baja (tecate). This particular course was voted as the best one in mexico in 2001, is awesome. I will race there in april again.

I said something negative about San Diego trails a couple of months back and ticked a few people off. Seriously though it's like anything that presents a challenge has been removed from the trail. I haven't encountered any obstacles that I had to think twice about attempting. Most of the popular spots down here are little more than fireroad. I'm not saying every trail needs to be a downhill kamikazee run but every trail should have challenging terrain and different single track routes..

Got Rocks?

Gridley Trail in Ojai. Large rocks? Check out the lower section… hehehe. Baby head rock gardens? You bet, just keep on climbing. Still not enough rocks? Take a right at the top of Gridley and climb along the ridge for about 8 miles toward TopaTopa. Turn around and enjoy the descent (and all the rocks you missed on the way up). Repeat until you no longer wish to see any more rocks. >8P

Downieville, Tahoe and Mammoth aren't even what most would consider Northern California. They may qualify as north eastern but nowhere near southern............
