Just wondering if anyone has a good road ride route in the Springs area? So far I've been doing that Woodman Cruise out of the Falcon Guide book. Looking for different routes with not to much traffic, flats, hills, long. I Could use any good suggestions. Thanks & Aloha Kerwin

I recently rode my recumbent out to Calhan from the Stetson hills area Via Woodman to Falcon and then out on Highway 24, up the Calhan highway to Judge Orr Road back to Falcon then returned down Woodman to Stetson Hills. It was about 64 miles, nice wide sholders on most of Woodman and the 24, and very little traffic on Calhan Highway and Judge Orr (it was a friday however, I don't know what traffic might be like on a weekend). The only bad part is parts of Woodman near Powers, or the route up Markscheffel (sp?) I took from my house have little to no shoulder and LOTS of traffic. The route has some rolling hills, nothing to steep, one big steep drop on Judge Orr, followed by a LONG easy climb.

I live up in Briargate, so I usually head out to Powers and head north until I reach the Black Forest or Hwy83 area. At which point I most often ride along Hwy83 which pending on the time doesn't have too much traffic and has some nice rolling hills that are decent in length. Or I'll head out into Black Forest via Old Ranch Road. Once you're in the Black Forest area there's virtually limitless options in terms of what route you want to make and how long of a ride you want to do, and there is very little traffic for the most part. Plus the hills are a lot of fun and you can usually get to at least 40+mph descending.

Yeah, Black Forest is a nice area for road rides, B.F. hwy back to Woodmen is a hoot cause it's all downhill, spinning along at 40+ on the side of the road with no shoulder and cars wizzing by can be nerve racking though.

115 south to Penrose is a good route I hear, still haven't done it though, the route they use for the Elephant rock ride over the palmer divide is real fun, they have a website with the exact route mapped out and everything, we were talking about doing it sometime as a fun group ride.

Anyone know if you can ride a bike onto the AFA? I don't think you are allowed to drive on, but how much of a security threat does a biker pose? There was a UCI event there back in the mid 80s and the big loop would be a pretty fun ride. Plus, there isn't a whole lot of traffic there...

Over by Palmer Lake and Monument, the hill on hwy105 is a blast to ride! Definitely a nice climb when heading east.

Yep, just get on at the south entrance parking area on the Sante fe trail, you could easily do the loop without anyone saying anything. We got on and did the road loop too but were stopped at the checkpoint between the north/south entrances so we just headed out the north entrance and hoped on the santa fe trail. Thats a good road ride and no one says anything except at the main entrances and that front checkpoint we were stopped at.
