Another Leviathan build....blah,blah...

1986 Views 21 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  the mayor
I'm sure everyone is sick of seeing Lev's...so here's another.
large frame with King h/s and seat collar weighed in at 2518 grams...about 5 Lbs 9 oz
XTR shifters,Cassette and rear derailuer
Dura Ace front der, Xt crank with 26/36 rings
Stan's Arch/DT 240 Mikesee wheels with Karma 1.9' tubeless
Avid J7's with 160/140 Alligator rotors
Dt Swiss XMC fork ...1622 grams cut with King race and star nut
All bolts are ti or aluminum
Totals in a 24.5 lbs..I've got a few parts to swap, so it should lose another 1/4 pound...or maybe gain 1/4 pound.
Ride is great....very different than the Hifi Pro29 it replaced.Where the Fisher was quick steering and stiffer suspension, the Lev steers steadier and the suspension is plush.
Fork is awesome...plush ,stiff and light.I have a G2 Fox...but not sure if I'll even try it...the Dt is that good( lighter, plusher and the carbon is sexy)
2010 RP23 with Boost Valve is taking some setup time.Very different than the 09 Fisher version. Still playing with air running 180psi with the p/p on 3...I weigh 165..it climbs well but is very compliant.
First race was a disaster...more me than anything else.Still more dialing in to do.
I think I built my do all bike....for all that I do.

Holy headset spacers Batman!

What's your inseam, if you know? Funky short head tubes.

Nice build. 24 1/2 lbs, wow.
I have a 36 inseam and I'm 6'....matched up with a 33 waist...I don't buy many pants off the rack.
The headtube is 4.5 inches.
Oddly, the Fisher had a 5" ht. with Zero stack headset.
If you add in the King headset and longer fork, I should have used less spacers to get the bars 1 inch below the saddle...but I had to put in an extra 20mm spacer.I have a nice light riser bar coming.
The bb is 1 inch higher though. I ended up in the same position.
But I was sweating it while building it....numbers are very different between the 2 bikes...just goes to show ya it's the total of all the numbers. And it's a bike...not a math quiz.
Nice bike. I like the polished chainstays, but holy headset spacers Batman.

It's good funk.
I likes my funk funked up.
I have 2 20mm spacers on there( the Fisher had a 20 and a 10)...I have a RaceFace Next riser coming....should be able to get rid on most of the spacers.

Yeah, but just because it's "normal" doesn't make it right. ;)

I sent my frame back to Doug and had a 6" head tube installed so I don't have to run 30 deg riser stems anymore. Rattlecan'd it this weekend, but messed it up. Have to strip and repaint. Seems there's a limit to how many coats of Rustoleum you can put on and actually have it dry/cure properly. It's not as many as I put on.
"I think I built my do all bike....for all that I do."

Great way to sum up a bike....I may have to start using that.
Good looking bike.

I'm so with you there.

That's why all my bikes have appropriate head tubes.

The XXL Sultan has a 6.5" HT. It FITS the bike.

I'm not sure why builders and frame co's don't increase the HT size accordingly.

Yeah, 'cause it's soooo important to be able to run a flat bar and flipped stem....

Cause they feel the same way about their road frames:rolleyes:

We're starting to sound like a bunch of Grant Petersens around here, not that that's a bad thing....

Nice bike too, BTW

At least builders are starting to catch on.Most of my mtb's had a 4-5" bar/seat difference in the 90's ( most bikes had 3" ht's, forks had short steerers and no good riser bars to be found). I bought an Orbea Orca road bike a few years ago...they took heat for their high head tube...now a lot of the mfgr's are going with the longer head tube.

Now, now. Just because you're short doesn't mean you can't play nice.:D

XL sized frames for my 192 centimeter height requires no flipped stems - just some extra plumbing like that pictured above in the OP's beautiful Leviathan build:

and this...

At least my Sugar takes a few less spacers and plumbing thanks to 100mm fork and a riser bar...

I'll take Padre's solution over all the plumbing. Nobody bats an eye when they see pictures of the typical "less tall rider's" bike with saddle bar height just about even - or maybe even the bars a tad higher than the saddle. But if a tall guy posts a photo of the same set up, the amount of spacers and plumbing needed to match a similar set up gets the crowd all worked up.:nono:

Here's the typical photo we see in terms of set up for less tall riders (nobody bats an eye)...

Actually no, it's soooo important to not have to run a 15 degree stem on top of 30mm of spacers with a 3" rise bar.

Better roll those eyes back.

Good lookin' Lev. I'd like to ride one of those someday, but I'm afraid it would make me want one. I'd prefer to stay happily married...

What's wrong with running a flat bar and a 90 deg stem? The bars I like are flat, I have long legs, my bike had a 4 3/4" head tube, I changed it to 6" so I don't have to run a cheap 30 deg stem plus spacers. Be happy you fit the off the shelf frame, some don't.

It must be soooo cool to be soooo cool....

wow:eek: That brought back some memories! I have been on some good rides with you on that bike:thumbsup: !

That took longer than expected!

Apologies to all for (so easily) ruffling feathers, to the OP for being the source of thread derailment (very nice Lev, by the way! I'd like to own one if my shortness wasn't accompanied by poorness) and especially to Padre. I was referring to the HT on his Quiring, but it's not my bike (and a different kettle of fish to prod frames), so I'll shut up now.

I do agree that all those headtubes could/should be a lot longer, and I should have made my statement clearer, or not at all, perhaps.

Peace Y'all.

I'm with you BB!

Sometimes you win (or get lucky w/ off-the-shelf) (i.e. my XL Sultan with 6" + head tube)

Sometimes, you adapt (my KM with a 4" ish HT). I'd rather be tall and use spacers than be short and spacerless. I'm thinking of adding some Pink Chris King spacers in lieu of my mixed bag-o-spacers on there so they really stick out. :D

I need a Fargo...9" head tube ;)
