I'm around 200lbs and currently ride a Specialized Epic. I am thinking of moving to a scalpel since I am not really happy with the brain shock. I ride XC, small "hops" no more than 1 foot off the ground. Is the carbon rear end strong enough?

True, I guess I was wondering if it would bottom out easily and hurt the shock?

As others have said, there will be no problems whatsoever. I am 230lbs and have been riding scalpels for the past four years. That said, I doubt I have done a legitimate drop in that entire time, I tend to roll everything when I'm riding it. The rear triangle/shock design rules for climbing and general fast, technical riding, but its not much different from a hardtail when descending, IMHO. Can't have everything I spose.
