70 lb rider. I'm thinking she could get away with an all or mostly aluminum 11 or 12-36 cassette.

The present 11-51t m5100 is ~650g, but she uses only the middle range. What's out there that's stupid light, but would work with a 70 lb rider and shifts decently? Doesn't have to be stock Shimano smooth.

EDIT: to not bump the thread but update - sunshine 11-36T aluminum block cassette - 233g with steel lock ring. Fits her MTB hub with road HG freehub body that shipped with a spacer for MTB use, without the spacer installed.

Man, if she only uses the middle range, then it seems like it'd be a pretty cool project to find a way to get an old XT 9-speed cassette on there. I have a backup bike that still has an old XT 7-speed cassette on it and that cassette is only like 270g and not expensive. :) That old backup bike has a twist grip too. Super light setup. And I'd think the 9 speed derailleurs are lighter too. But I guess you might have to play around with a lot of spacers to make one work but it sounds like 1x9 might work for her.

I bought a Ztto slr 11-36t 11 speed. It only comes in road spacing, so I'll either have to machine a few mm off the back, or run it 10 speed as a 13-36t with a tiny spacer. Without the steel 11T (which she has never made effective use of so far), it is under 150g. I also bought an m5120 11 speed 11-42 cassette and derailleur. If that derailleur will work with the Ztto cassette, that might be the winner.

New wheels on order. I'll mess with this more when they come in. With this cassette change and the new wheels setup tubeless, her bike should be down under 22 lb with 4 lb of plus sized tires and a dropper post.
