Alternatives to SIR9

2609 Views 37 Replies 28 Participants Last post by  Clink
I was leaning toward getting a SIR9 frame for my first 29er build project this summer - but between Niner not answering their e-mail and all the reported delivery issues, I'm thinking maybe I should consider something else.

I want a steel hard-tail hopefully with a SS or geared option. Anybody have any suggestions for quality alternatives?

cheers,

Take a look at Vassago. They have a Jabberwocky that can be run 1x9 with a gear plug that they make.
What size do you need. If you would fit, the OS Bikes Blackbuck frame would be a great one to consider - but it only comes in one size. Great value if it would be your size though.
Salsa El Mariachi - EBB disc gear/no gear good price, great fork and nice steel.

+1 I LOVE mine!
You could get a custom made Curtlo for the same price as a SIR 9....they come in multi-speed or single speed, but I'm sure for a few more $ you could get a EBB with the musti-speed frame.

Just prepared to be patient.;)
hey - thanks for some good ideas. I knew there were some other steel hard-tail frames out there but i didn't have any feel what might be some of the better ones...

i'm not a hard size to fit : 5'10" with about a 32" inseam so I'm guessing somewhere around a 18" frame or so should be close.

thanks again

Doctapow,

I'm sorry no one returned your email. We are normally very good at responding to direct questions.

s.i.r. 9 production has been a headache and we are experiencing delays with 853 tubing. The 853 tubing is made by Reynolds and we have no control over their delivery schedule when delays occur. We are expected to deliver frames to dealers at the end of July.

I apologize for our poor service in answering your questions and wish we had more frames in stock but demand has far outstripped our most optimistic business plans for 2009. We are aware of the issues this is causing and are working to correct it.

Chris, Steve - thanks for the response. I understand the Reynolds tubing issue might be something beyond your control. So it sounds like even when the frames do arrive, they are likely to be all spoken for?

Regarding the e-mail - one of my reasons for leaning toward Niner in the first place was the reputation for good customer service - so maybe I am just the exception. But I did email twice - once to [email protected] and once to the General Sales address on the Niner website.

If there is a better address to use - can you let me know?

cheers,
james

James,

The entire s.i.r. 9 batch is not sold as of yet. We do recommend working with a dealer and securing a deposit to insure you get the size and color you are looking for till we get stock levels to normal amounts.

I do read every email that comes in through [email protected]. I try to answer the emails at [email protected] but I have been very busy so I have passed the emails on to our customer service staff while traveling or just too busy to give a proper response.

If you don't mind passing on your email address to me ([email protected]) I would like to figure out why your emails were not responded to in a timely manner. Thanks again for your support and sharing your experience as this makes us a better company in the end.

Take a look at Ventana, I've never had to wait more than a month for anything from them.
Not a "traditional" 29er manufacturer, but the Rocky Mountain Hammer can be had in fixie or geared:

Granted, you can't build it up from scratch (well, you might be able to if you order just the frame), so that might not work.
Dude, let it go!!!

Chris and Steve are being open and honest about their supply chain issue, and you are babbling about a small boutique dime/dozen aluminum tubing made bikes....

If Reynolds is having problems with supplying tubes, what the hell do you expect them to do?

Geesh!

Umm, I believe the name of this thread is "Alternatives to Sir9" Just giving a suggestion.

And plus, I don't give a damn about a dime a dozen farmed out Chinese made bike.
Just wait for the SIR9. You won't regret it.
Singular's are starting to trickle in. Got the first teeny tiny batch the other day. a whole bunch more coming shortly.
