Posted this in the wheel forum before I found this group. Sorry if that was not cool...

At any rate, I have a 2017 Jet RDO 27.5+ (L) and would like to talk with anyone who has regularly switched to 29 wheels with this ride.

Did you stick with the 140 fork, or go to a 130 (fork, or do a cartridge switch with the Pike the bike came with)? What wheel/tire combo do you ride? Anything else I might like to know before I get a set of wheels and try it out?

Many thanks in advance! M

I didn’t like my old 17’ Jet 9 RDO with a 140mm up front with 29ers on.

The front end and bb felt too tall. Moving to a 130mm airspring helped get me back to where I wanted to be.

140mm felt fine with the 27.5+ tires though.

In the end, I didn’t really like 27.5+ so I kept the 130mm airspring in and stuck with 29ers.

Thanks for the reply.

Did you try staying w/ the 130 w/ both sets of wheels...or did that get the bb too low and increase your pedal strikes/monkey around w/ the front end too much the other way?

Did you swap the cassette between wheels? Or use a different cassette (and chain, I guess) when swapping?

Thanks again...stay well and healthy, ride lots!

Once I put the 29ers on the bike, I honestly really didn’t touch the 27.5+ tires hardly at all.

I sold it with the 27.5+ and some light test rides prior to sale with the plus tires, it felt perfectly fine. Not too low at all.

When I have wheels that I swap around, I have decided cassettes and rotors on each wheel.

Constantly swapped between 29, 27.5+, Mullet setups on my Jet 9 RDO - Running stock 130mm fork, only change I had to make on the 27.5+ front/rear setup was flipping the shock to firm mode. Was ridable in open with 27.5+ but liked having the rear bit more firm and leverage the extra volume in the tires. Did have separate set of wheels, cassettes and rotors which made swapping around so easy

FWIW,

i've swapped more than a few times on my 2017 RIP9RDO, the BB drop is consistently about 1/2" - give or take - so whether that causes you pedal strikes depends entirely on your trail character (buff trail not so likely, rocky rooty stuff more so). I've moved from 175mm to 165mm cranks to keep this from being a problem for me as I enjoy rocky trail.

I currently have wheelsets that are built to within about 60g total weight difference (29er carbon rim, 2.4" tires; 27.5 alloy rim, 2.6" tires). To me the upshot is what many others have shared before - 29er is more stable at speed, 27.5 more agile, but it's not a huge difference - I ride with the same bike setup, fork psi, etc., in either case.

My bike originally came with 27.5 with 2.8" tires and the "feel" of the ride was almost identical IMO with 29er build, drawing-down to 2.6" tires on the 27.5 rims brought out the difference in the ride.

Good luck.

FrankS29, OttaCee and bear...Many thanks for the insights and advice. I am going to get a set of wheels and see what's what.

I'll probably stick w/ the 27.5+ (2.6) wheels for the winter as it is pretty cruddy riding right now (lots of mud, water and some snow...slower going) and get the 29's (2.4) set up for spring when the trails clear up and the rides get longer and cleaner (literally and figuratively). Will go with a separate cassette, chain and rotors to make the switches easier. I'll post up when I get it set up.

Merci! again...stay well and healthy, ride lots!
