It’s always cool to have picked up a bike that was ahead of its time (just listen to Rene!) and the first RFX is the most obvious Turner example of a bike ahead of its time. I have tried to think of other bikes that I considered ahead of their time and it forced me to try and define what makes a bike ahead of its time. Here’s what I came up with:
1. ~ 2 (or more) between the end of a model run and its rebirth
2. Released in similar incarnations (travel/geometry/weight)
3. More popular in its rebirth
I don’t hope for this to be an exact measurement and there will surely be a lot of subjectivity to people’s evaluations but what bikes do you consider to be ‘ahead of their time’?

Interestingly enough I owned a '99 QM and loved it too. I felt like it was ahead of its time too but I am not sure it qualifies in terms of a rebirth... Maybe I should loosen the qualifications?

Sheesh, and people mock me for the colors I've ran in the last couple years....

Cool to see the various incarnations of the RFX. I was looking back at pics of my first Spot and found a bunch of different setups over 5 years including; 2 completely different drivelines, 5 forks (Vanilla 125, Maverick, Float 125, Z1 FR, Pike), 5 rear shocks (Romic, Swinger Air, DHX-c, DHX-a, RP3), 3 wheelsets and a few different stem/bar/post/saddle combos. I think its a testament to the quality of the ride and the versatility to have such a wide variety of setups - the frame stays the same as the bits continue to evolve or UGI strikes. I don't think the Spot has had a re-birth because its been popular from day one, but it re-wrote the books for what was considered an "XC" bike and its certainly stood the test of time.

I'm pretty sure even though it's been out for a few years, we'll look back and find the Highline is ahead of it's time and looking at the similarities of competing brand models, it might come back.

But then that depends on what the '09 RFX is like.

Quasi and Switchblade, Turner Buner and Five Spot, and Ventanna La Bruja. And now I think the Canfiled ONE and it's iterations Sauce, Can Diggle and Can-Can. I think all had/have solid rear suspension executions and the front triangle varied from iteration to iteration.

I think that is an outstanding formula.
