Advice on lightening a Rohloff wheelset

747 Views 1 Reply 2 Participants Last post by  1990gti
Currently I have a Rohloff with a Mavic D321 in the rear, Phil Wood 20mm in the front with a D321 also. My riding has become more XC/AM than DH in the last few years, and accordingly, I am thinking of building up a different wheelset. I have a CK 20mm with Sun Singletrack in my sights but was wanting suggestions for replacing the D321. Any ideas for a different rim or should I just suck it up? I am 6ft 1 and 198lbs. Cheers, Randaz

I would suggest taking a look at the DT EX5.1d rims. Lightweight at 500g but they seem pretty bomber. This is what i'm running on my all mountain/light freeride hardtail. I like getting airborne with them and they don't complain, but then again i'm only 145lbs. Haven't had em for long but so far i'm impressed. If you are looking for something a little stronger, try the Mavic 721's. These are great rims, lots of people will agree with me here, and I think they are lighter than the singletracks, and probably stronger as well. Don't forget, you can save a bit more weight by going with double butted spokes if you don't already have em. Just don't get alluminum nipples as they round easily. Then again, you could always just trade your Rohloff wheelset for mine, that would save you quite a bit, at least in the rear :D

Good luck
