Advice needed for a front derailleur

509 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  hendrix
Hi My name is Chris and i live in Greece and one day i had a dream of bying a bicycle again! (i am 40 years old now!)
I use to ride since i was 8 but lately i was out of the sport.
Where i live the hills are very steep so i decided that a mountain bike was my only option.
I am riding everyday now and i solved most of the problems except one.
I think that my bicycle is very nice and light (Mongoose Meteore composite pro)
but i really want to upgrade the Shimano Deore front derailleur.
I want to upgrade to a XTR frond derailleur since the fd i have gives me some problems,
but i cant decide which one.
I ended up to either the XTR M961(high clamp, bottom swing) or the M961(bottom clamp. top swing).
I can put any derailleur i like on the seat tube (high clamp, bottom swing or top swing)
so I would really like some help in order to decide which one is better.
My desire is to have the smoothest and most reliable gear sifhting possible so price is not my main concern.
Anybody that might have an advice for me is welcomed.
Thank you hor hearing me.

Hello Greece, enjoy the olympics, and pound a couple of shots of Ouzo for me, I have some good Ouzo stories from my misspent youth I could share with you over a nice glass of it over ice.
Anyway, basically, all shitmano derailleur work great when properly adjusted, from their cheapest one up to their most overpriced XTR. If your shitmano derailleur isn't shifting well, it far more likely to be an adjustment issue, or a cable or shifter issue.

Hello there, i see you know where this place is.
If i understood correctly you have been here in the past.
If you come near here again i would be more than glad to buy you a drink. :)
I could also send you some if you want there is no problem for me, quite the opposite.
Today it was the bicycle road race and it was really nice to see the race from close.
Well my derailleur works but i would like to upgrade since i cannot install a Ngear chain stop or similar to prevent my chain from falling off the small gear (triple gear set in front).
In order to do that i must install a bottom swing , high clamp derailleur.
Shifting is very good and i know how to adjust things but i dont like the fact that
the low limit adjustment screw is not very accurate.
Everything now works fine but i think it would be wise to have a replacement at hand because here you cant buy anything....
