ACTION ALERT: NC Legislators move to take millions from conservation trusts

On Thursday, February 3, the North Carolina Senate took its first vote on legislation that would decrease two conservation trust funds. Senate Bill 13 would take $1.8 million from the Farmland Preservation Trust Fund and $8.5 million from the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund. This legislation is moving quickly, so if you are opposed to this, write your Representative and Senator today and ask them to oppose Senate Bill 13.

The legislation is part of an effort to shift money from this year’s state budget into the next fiscal year. Legislators are facing a $3.7 billion budget shortfall for the next fiscal year, and are looking for ways to reduce the size of that shortfall.

Click on the link below if you want to take action now by writing your state legislators.

I wonder if this is in part an attempt at keeping the schools open and laying off fewer teachers for 2011/12...........no doubt cut-backs and "re-appropriations" all along the way. Folks definitely need to ask questions and find out where tax dollars are going.

According to the link..........."These trust funds leverage local dollars, protect farms and create jobs". With a reported NC budget shortfall of 3.7 (3.5 according to Buncombe County) BILLION dollars for fiscal year 2011-12 questiones have to be asked and answered! This is no way to run the state of North Carolina...........or is it? Please contact your representatives in Raleigh regarding this conservation trust AND our children's education. I went to a meeting last night regarding the school budget last night and it was very grim for the future........yet again.

I know this is probably not a popular opinion but if you want services you need to pay for them. The only way we can afford these programs is to raise taxes and/or cut other programs and/or get a loan. Raising taxes would allow us to keep the teachers and the conservation trust. There are roughly 10 million people in NC. We all would need to pay an extra 350.00 to close the gap. Obviously some people can't afford that much but some people can. And some can afford much more.
