Dirt Rag...............

I like most of the magazines out there but from your description of what your looking for it is Dirt Rag.....I can't wait till it arrives......so I read the web updates regularly...took awhile to get used to it...but once I got hooked....have to have it.

Ive checked out MBA, Dirt Rag, BIKE, and Decline but Dirt is by far the best imo, it makes me chuckle, the porn amazes me, its also very informative. The only drawlbacks are thats like 8 bucks per issue and its from the uk so it takes a while to get. but i don't care, its worth it!
ps Decline is my second fave

Dirt Rag, Bike

i live on the east coast so i like Dirt Rag (based out of Pittsburgh). bike tests and such are based on terrain found where i live, not SoCal where i never ride (MBA is based out of Cali).
I also like Bike cause they are a well rounded mag, good articles, pics and content.
MBA is crap, they are marketing whores and are very biased with their bike reviews. it's basically a magazine for "beginners".
the English mags are ok but they are expensive and alot of the content is useless to riders in the States.

Personally I like MBA (Mountain Bike Action). Probably my favorite magazine. Think they tend to focus on bike reviews for commonly available mass produced bikes, which drives purists crazy on this board. They also review expensive bikes, which tends to drive broke mf'rs crazy too. Both of the editors are older guys with day jobs who tend to write with a perspective more similar to my own, which I appreciate. Recommend you check out MBA, also easier to find & cheaper than alot of other mags.

Decline has GREAT pics, but many of the articles are written by angry, nearly illiterate preteens who text more than they type. Couple of good regular features by vories & mark wier however. Overall a very good mag.

Literally can't stand Dirt Rag. I find this surprising because I can get into most writing having to do w/mountain biking, but this mag is just too much. This is a shame because I live & ride on the east coast - near pittsburgh. In fact ride PA trails several times a year. Articles and bike reviews are all written from the perspective of an overly idealistic leftist hippie unemployed college student newly returned from a hemp festival who somehow can drop $7k on a rigid titanium bike frame. The fact that I ride a bike offroad does not mean that I'm planning on moving into a (non-leather) teepee, becoming a pacifist-vegan-democrat-animal activist-deadhead & urging the wife to throw away her razor & non-organic deoderant anytime soon. Also seems like dirtrag has a fixation with rigid single speed titanium 29r's that cost north of $10k & can't be purchased in any store + beer that costs north of $15 for a 6 & can't be purchased in any store. Kudos to anyone that can endure the taint punishment associated with riding such a bike, but that crap's not for me. I drink schlitz & ride a full suspension specialized & thoroughly enjoy both without guilt. Don't recommend this mag. In fact the only thing enjoyable about Dirt Rag turns out to be identifying all the ways it sucks.

Damn Big Mac, sounds like you have issues with bikes that aren't fully Speshy's. There's huge variety of bikes out there for every type of rider, maybe you should be a little more open-minded. Then again, you voluntarily drink Schlitz. 'nuff said. :p

Dirt Rag, Bike and Dirt. UK mags are great but as others have said they're expensive.
Mountain Bike Action is call Mountain Bike Fiction for a reason.
I do agree with B-Mac that Dirt Rag goes a little over board with it's 29er ridgid stuff but they are more into the life style and the fringe trends then most. I love that they review beer and other adult bevreges because cycling is about the experiance and good times which offten includes a cold one with friends at the end of a ride, weather it's macro or micro brew. I feel that Bike caputers this best though.

Judge others much BM?

Might want to try a decent microbrew and listen to Dawn of the Dead and read a little Bike to smooth out the aggro in you. :)

Bike is my fave, MBA sucks. Dirt and Dirt Rag are OK.

I totally agree with B-Mac, except for the choice in beer. I was LMAO! I have to say that I anxiously await my MBA every month. I've looked through Dirt Rag several times while at my LBS, but I just don't get that mag at all.

MBA sucks. As someone mentioned before, it's a marketing publication disguised as a mountain bike magazine, owned by an extremist right wing publishing company and edited by a bunch of aging, ex-roadie, teetotalling Jesus freaks.

Although I do like Dirt Rag, I will concede that they try way to hard to be the hippie outsider. I mean, enough with the singlespeed and 29r reviews.

So true - I've thought this since I first saw it ~ 15 yrs ago

ETA - I think BIKE is decent compared to the other offerings
