Hmmmm 2 radios for $17.99. "communicate with an associate from 1.5 theoretical miles away"

Sounds like those cheapo childrens 9v battery walkie talkies you get at Kmart. The ones which only work from 20' away. And you never know if you hear the person through the radio.... or the sound of his voice from across the room.

I bet it would be pretty sweet if you were riding with a group to have a few of these in case somebody in the rear went down or for purposes of coordenating a group of people. I think these would be better for race organizers than casual riders.

Geez you guys are tearing him up...

They're only 18 bucks... so if they suck it won't be like he spent a benjamin on em. I don't think I'd buy em for 18 bucks, but maybe hes more geeky than me ;)

On the plus side, you get to feel like Dick Tracey when you use them. I remember when I was little I had a watch that looked like it had the functionality of these, but in reality was just a crappy kids digital watch. Reguardless of how well they work their concept is decidedly cool.

A real Geek's GMRS Radio

Yes, I actually researched specs for receiver sensitivity (0.3 uV/m) and antenna efficiency. The taller antennae on these Motorola T7400 GMRS/FRS radios mean they can reach much farther on 2 Watts than many can with 3 to 5 Watts, better battery life and longer range.

This "little" unit can reach a "theoretical" 12 miles, longest range of the Motorola brand. I've tested it to 8 miles over top of some big hills at Henry Coe (HQ to Hunting Hollow) and heard the other party clear as day. It saved hours of search and rescue for a lost soul on that occasion. It's proved itself invaluable on many, many rides. And these radios would have helped on many more rides to eliminate confusion and back tracking, if I could encourage more to carry them. They're tall but light and clip anywhere. I have four units I take to rides. I carry one on way-out solo rides too.

They don't fit on the wrist, but I use it with an arm band for easy access. Around $85 on Amazon for the pair, including rechargeable batteries, two recharge docking stations, belt clips,....

Hey Larry, thanks for the info on those radios. I'm looking to pick up a pair, and you always seem up-to-date on the techy stuff.

Question: do you know where to get the little remote microphones for those radios? We used radios at a group ride at Boggs and they worked great, but a couple folks had the little shoulder-mounted microphone/speaker, allowing them to leave the radio in their pack. Very handy.

I don't use the shoulder microphone as the pictures made it look nearly as bulky as the radio itself, and adds that much more weight. I also worried about the extra wires running around getting snagged.

Nevertheless, I'll look more into it. Sounds interesting if they got it to work at Boggs.
