I've been shaving my legs for a while now, and while at first I was using shaving lotion, the idea(s) below seem to work a little better.

I've been using Basis samples, a "cleaner clean face wash" that I got from a booth at Sea Otter this year (and am almost out of, dammit). Dump about 1/2 an ounce under running water in the tub, throw the razor in and let it soak. Hell, throw your legs in there, too, and let them soak. If you can't find Basis at your local drug emporium, just use something that will make the water a little soapy. Mr. Bubble works, but you might have to use lotion on your legs afterwards. The soap seems to irritate more than something like Basis, which rinses off cleanly.

Shave with the grain. Or against it. Or sideways, for all I care- whatever works for you. Keep rinsing your legs to keep up the invigorating sliming soapy action.

I still haven't found the perfect razor, so I got nada to recommend. I hate the razors with the "lubricating strip". They're too snotty at first, then they're ok for maybe one shave, then it's downhill from there. Right now, I'm using single-bladed Bics without a lube strip. Not quite as close a shave, but... I would advise against cheapo store-branded razors, tho. Unless you go by the credo "Chicks Dig Scars".

Any other thoughts?

I'll handle this one...

I don't shave mylegs because:

1) Cause it seems like a big pain in the a$$. I find shaving my face annoying enough, if I had to shave my legs, i'd probably spend all my time in the bathroom.

2) Most men don't. I don't always follow the crowd, but this is a factor. It's not that this is the reason I don't do it, its more that this is one of the reasons that it would never occur to me TO do it.

3) My legs are white. With my reddish/brownish leg hair, I don't look like such a freak. I imagine if I shaved them, I'd glow in the dark.

4) Where do you stop? I imagine you start at your ankles and work your way up, but where do you stop? I'd rather not have a bikini line at all, let alone trying to decide where it should be.

5) I don't think I'd like that smooth feeling on my own legs.

Thoughts? Yeah. It's a lot like smoking. . .

The easiest way to quit is to not start in the first place!

Those of you on the fence about leg shaving, I implore you! Don't do it!

I toyed with the idea for a long time (largely because I wondered what the hell my legs looked like under all that hair, but also because of...well...lets just say that on really long road rides, the hair had a funny way of causing some discomfort and we'll leave it at that! ), but could never actually bring myself to do it until I registered for a triathlon two months ago. I figured, "What the hell? It's only frickin' leg hair, and it'll grow back before ya know it."

So... I did it. After hearing me sloshing around in the tub for EVER, my girlfriend knocked on the bathroom door.

"What on earth are you doing in there?" she asked.

"Errrrr...ummm....nothing." I sheepishly replied.

"Doesn't sound like nothing." she shot back.

"I'm just taking a bath, that's all."

"Are you shaving your legs?"

"I don't know what you're talking about. I'll be out in a minute."

"You are!"she proclaimed.

"You're crazy. Leave me alone!" I countered.

I looked in the tub at the disgusting amount of hair floating around and wondered if perhaps I wasn't, in fact, the mythical Pan. Half-man, half-sheep.

That was two months ago, almost to the day.

I've tried to let the hair grow back, but I'm like some hairless junky; trying desperately to get back on the wagon but I just can't seem to do it.

The stubble grows back and I'm like, "Okay, just going to let it grow and go back to being a normal, hairy-legged guy. It's perfectly natural.

I can get past the initial itchyness of it, but I get to a certain point where I've got this ridiculous looking straight hair that's long enough to be plainly visible but too short to go about it's curly, leg covering business.

I crack every time.

A shower or two later and I'm back to smoooth.

I'm so ashamed. I have no willpower.

(Okay, so it's not really that bad. The upside is that my g.f. likes it, and I do look a lot less beastly in the roadie garb. It's cool to see what one's leg muscles actually look like under the fur, and the mud and grime rinses away that much easier, which in turn gets me out of the shower and to my post-ride beer that much faster  BUT It feels really wierd the first time you put pants on...)

So anyway, if you bite the bullet and do it, watch out. There's no easy way to go back!! AAAAAH!

A woman's take:

Years ago someone told me to use hair conditioner. You know, that stuff you're S.O. uses to condition and detangle her hair? I've been using it for many years now - it's convenient because, since I have long hair I always have conditioner.

A big advantage I find using conditioner is that you don't need to use lotion after shaving. The conditioner lubes and moisturizes. Plus it's cheap. You don't need the expensive stuff - Suave will do.

Razors - use a women's razor - the new Venus razors are triple bladed. They also have a large head/platform that was weird to get used to at first but really cuts down on the nicks. You can shave fast with these razors and not worry about cutting yourself.

Personally, I prefer guys to have hairy legs.....or at least not smooth legs.

FP,

Going on almost two years of leg shaving and would have to recommend Mach 3. I use the Quattro for face shaving and the Mach 3 for legs. Alittle pricey but very nice. I also use Gilette shaving gel and it seems to work the best for me.

Not to answer for FP, but for me....I love the feel of cotton sheets on my legs after a good shaving....plus for some reason I just feel sexy afterwards. :D

If someone who had never shaved their legs before had been considering doing so, where would be cut off point be? It wouldn't make sense to stop at the lycra line of bike shorts, would it? Hypothetically speaking, of course.

yeah, i'm wondering where do you stop? um, sometimes, if you have hairy legs, the, um, hair, goes all the way up. you'd look like a weirdo naked, with shaved legs and a hairy butt, chest and back. do you just take it all off in that instance?

I have a sixteen year old daughter and a thiteen year old. Both of whom ask me when I am going to shave my legs because they are getting gnarly. They did advise me not to shave my thighs cause it will only grow back thicker and "that would look Gross." What have I started? :D

This is a VERY important consideration (see picture below of the first time I shaved).

Depending upon the dresses that you plan to wear, I would say higher is better.
