Is it possible to use a front 9 spd derailleur on an 8 spd system or will there be shifting problems?

Yes. I ran one for a year with little to no problems. The rear tail of the 9 speed is spaced a hair thinner than an 8 speed but you still should able to get into most gears without chain rub if you don't cross your chainline too badly.
