Forgot which chain to use for this setup:

XTR M950 8 spd cassette
XT M760 (?) 9spd cranks
XTR M950 Rear derailleur
XT 9spd front derailleur

I know it will work, since I was running this before but forgot which chain i should use.

i'm thinking 8spd chain since it's wider and will fit the chainrings, but the narrower 9spd chain won't fit well with the cassette and r. der.

there may be some rub with the front der. since its designed for the narrower chain.

make sense?

Either one should work fine. If you're worried about rub, use the 9 speed chain.

Yup, both will work.

I'm running 9sp chains/derrailleurs on an 8 sp cassette. Makes for a drivetrain that doesn't mind mud or getting smacked around.

Running a similar setup as you w/ an 8 speed chain. I have an 8 speed XTR Rear der, 9 speed cranks, 9 speed front der. and 8 speed cassette, no problems. I like having a nice beefy chain and there shouldn't be rubbing issues as long as you set your derailleur limits properly.
