What an odd looking little ride. How many people think we'd be riding mountain bikes today if that had been the route followed by the mainstream manufacturers?

Looks like something a Hillbilly would cobble together. :D

1985 Mountain Machine 09er

The Velocitech came stock as an 04er...
I converted mine into an 09er a few years ago.
Color matched red anodized parts including rims.
Matching Kenda Small Block 8 rear and front tire 20 and 29 inch.
Pace 1' diameter threadless fork
Paul Moto BMX V-brakes with Avid Tri-align adjustment (best of both worlds)
Rolls over anything and whips around corners like a champ.

I would love to ride this bike! It looks crazy and fun and isn't that what mountain biking is really all about? Thanks for posting this...and I always thought the original 46er mountain cannondales were weird.

You are most certainly welcome....
I haven't been on this forum in ages.
It has been so long that I discovered my account was wiped out so I had to start again.
I've been rifling through my parts bin for the first time in nearly a decade and found enough goodies to almost complete a new fun project.
The 1985 09er was my response to the 69er craze.
This time I plan to widen my perspective a bit.

That could easily be the ugliest bike I've ever seen.................................I LOVE IT! Looks like you had a blast with the build. :)

Blast to build and a blast to ride.
What shocked me most is how after the addition of a 26er fork and 29er wheel the top tube stayed flat due to rake.
One big design challenge was the monster head tube length... The throwback BMX stem was actually a necessity because it was the only safe option with what little steer tube I had left.

Jeff,
*It isn't a Salsa, but I think I may have the spare 120mm 1' stem
(in titanium) you are seeking in my parts box amongst many other things....

120mm (salsa-like) titanium stem with rise

Jeff,
Found it. Wood Hardwood Wood stain Metal Household hardware

In your quote line you say you are looking for a 120mm 1' Salsa stem with rise...
I have this titanium one that is Salsa-esque...
Looks to be about 10deg or 15deg rise at most.
You have dibs if you want it.

*do you have any spare Avid Tri-align cantilever cable hanger knarps?
