I want to run a White Industries trials freewheel with a race face single chainring (not the narrow/wide version.)

White industries recommends an 8 speed chain, while race face says to use 9/10 speed chain.

Does it matter which chain I use or am I over thinking this??

It's fine to run 9 speed chain. I actually run a 9-speed on my geared bike and on one of my single speeds. This way the geared bike can get a new chain fairly often and the old geared chain becomes the single speed chain. The approach should help maintain shift quality on the geared bike.

The single speed does not care as much about chain wear although you never really want to let the chain wear too far because they can snap and also they wear your cogs or white industry freewheel.
