8 and 9 speed cassettes are interchangable, without the use of spacers.
Shifters may be a little hard to come by. Ebay is always a good source. SRAM had some 8 speed Attacks & Rockets in their lineup of late. I don't know if that is still the case, but seems likely that some retailers would have some of those laying around.
