8" on rigid, am I asking for trouble?

If it's a 20mm I'd say you're probably fine. Before my Instigator broke I briefly threw a 8" onto it (normally had no brake) just to see what a brake on it would be like, and it was QR, and let me tell you, if you were just rolling slowly down a driveway and braked, you could pretty much see and feel the front end of the bike twist to the left.
