ok - I'm trying to cheap out on a budget build for my 11 year old nephew for him to start mtn biking (from BMX). I found some Shimano M495 or something front disc brake calipers (mech) for Manitou forks with the 74mm direct mount calipers. Now can I buy a set of shimano (or other brands) 51mm to 74mm front and rear caliper adapters for these brakes to work on his bike (it has std 51mm IS mounts)? Looking at it and thinking it through - I see no difference between them and say the Avid BB7's (besides quality) - mounting wise it looks like the same idea... am I right?

You are correct, sir!

The only thing to consider is whether the caliper body clears the Avid (or Hayes) adapter.

But yeah, essentially the adapter causes the 51mm IS mount to mimic a 74mm post mount, and that is what the caliper it designed to mount to, so the spacing works exactly as you thought.
