7-speed cassette/freehub question

Hey folks, I have a buddy that has an old 7-speed bike; but his wheels are trashed and I had a spare 9-spd wheelset. My problem is with the cassette. My 9-spd wheelset is an Italdega disc hubset and has a standard freehub body like everyone is probably used to.

I tried to find a 7-spd one and got one from Jenson because someone ordered it and decided not to get it. This Shimano 7-spd cassette appears to have the freehub body built into it. Does this mean that it won't work with the newer wheelset?

I've only ever used cassette that were inserted onto the freehub body. This 7spd looks like it's got threads on it so that it would take place of the freehub body.

You can tell me that I wasted the $14 for the cassette that I got from Jenson; but this guy is short on cash and can't upgrade his drivetrain to 9spd at this point.

Any advice?

Hi there !
The problem is that you actually bought what is called a "freewheel". It is a cassette that already has the ratchet mechanism built into itself and does not fit onto a regular cassette hub. So...sorry, this part is no good for you. :(

But you can use a 7spd cassette on a 8/9 speed freehub body, but you have to put a spacer before putting on the cassette. You can buy a spacer like that at your local bike shop. It is only a few millimeters thick and a couple of dollars usually.

Feel free to ask any questions if my explanation is not clear,
Jean-Sebastien
