Me and a few friends are doing a 7 day trip with no access to AC current( No power), no plug-ins.This is a cross country type mtn. bike trip, what GPS system would be the best for our trip? A lightweight handheld or handle bar mount gps system is what we have in mind, but which one will use the least amount of batteries?.Also is there a system that can be recharged by say... solar or handcrank or bicycle generator? We don't want to carry 20lbs of batteries.Any suggestions would be helpful.

check out Garmin's Etrex Vista HCx. It's rated for 25 hours on a set (2) AA's. It has the longest battery life in a gps that I'm aware of.

REI and places like that have solar chargers, etc. but probably weigh more and certainly cost a lot more than probable 3-4 extra sets of AA's you'd need to carry.

Wal-Mart.com had the Vista HCx for $165.00 the other day; if it is still available that would be your best bet.

My Edge 705 lasts about 17-18 hours on a full charge. Add an Energizer Energi to Go USB charger and you probably won't need all that many lithium AA cells to go the 7 days.

Or maybe talk to this guy about a dynamo hub powered USB charger.
