I’m looking for recommendations on 50c-ish tires with some chunky side knobs for the desert floor single track around where I live. I’m currently on 47 all road tires and they’re a bit sketchy in the turns… tough casing is a must.

What tires have you guys had good luck with for bouncing in and out of single track?

I have one year on a Pirelli Gravel Mixed 700x35. It’s been great on almost everything from gravel to singletrack. The rubber seems to be of a higher durometer (harder) so it should last long. No noticeable tread wear after ~800 km, including 300 km of bikepacking. Not the best for slippery/wet rocks, however very good in dry loose rocks. Has a protective belt. Available in 650x50.

I’ve not ridden either of these. They have four casing options.

I really like the look of that Juniper Ridge. Thanks for the info

This thread is relevant to me, since I'm from the same area, have the same types of trails, and also need something 650x50-ish. Right now the bike has WTB Horizons which aren't even remotely close to cutting the mustard. What's the ride, is that a Kona?

Yea, it's a new Kona Rove. Universal Cycles has the Pirelli tires linked above in 50c in stock... very tempting.

Where do you usually ride? I need to find some really good gravel routes around the city.

Nice, the Rove looks good. The Pirellis are tempting. So far I'm still sussing out where to ride aside from the canal trails and just farm connector roads, I'm just starting to find that stuff really. Unfortunately in the Southeast valley I haven't found too much yet, though I look forward to finding more even if I have to travel a bit. The pic above looks good, wherever that was taken. Right now if I start to get even a little moon dust under the tires the whole thing starts to get a little squirrely, hence the tire search.

Im way over in the west valley. FINS is basically in my backyard, and that pic was taken in that general area. Lots of low land singletrack over here around the edges of Estrella park.

I run a pair of Juniper Ridge endurance casing tires on my gravel bike. They are great tires, they roll really well on pavement for tires that have such good knobs. But they do not have cornering knobs. They work great for climbing and descending the loose over hard conditions in south Cal. And since I'm not an aggressive cornered, much as I would like to be, the lack of cornering knobs doesn't really bother me. And no cornering knobs are a real plus on pavement.

If you can't run 2.1s, that cuts out the option of looking at XC mountain bike tires, as 27.5x2.1 is about as narrow as they go.

Im running WTB Sendero on rear, but thats prob too aggresive? When i run that wheelset im more concerned with trail performance. In front a Specialized GC 27.5x2.1
I actually really like the look of that tire... Im not seeing anything but a light casing though. Not sure it would survive the desert with a lightweight casing. Ill have to do more research.

Edit: Looks like the SG2 is a tough casing... definitely interested in this tire. Thanks for the heads up.
