Does anyone know the spacing for the old Shimano 6 speed cassettes and 7 speed cassettes?

I am doing a new build and want to use old 6 speed XT thumb shifters with the additional "ghost shift". I want to do a 1X6 or 1X7 using an XT 750 RD. I think the spacing for 6 speed cassettes is 5.5mm and the 7 speed is 5.0. Is this correct and were the original cassettes the same width? Is .5mm a small enough difference to just go ahead and get a 7 speed cassette? What about chain width?

Thanks in advance for any help.

What hub will you be using?

The major difference between 6 and 7 speed Shimano, besides the spacing, is Hyperglide.

Shimano 6 speed is Uniglide.

Shimano 7 speed is Hyperglide.

The spline pattern is slightly different between the two. Uniglide cogs will fit on Hyperglide freehub bodies, but not vice-versa -- and Hyperglide-C adds more complications.
