Any opinions?

I'm a road biker, so I'm not sure that I can tell what's right on a mtn bike since I'm used to riding very stretched out and low.

I've been test riding mediums. The medium feels a bit twitchy but I thought that was just the nature of the epic. I was talking to someone who is 5'11" 32" inseam and he thought a large is the right size for me.

If it's equal either way, I'll probably get a medium so my girlfriend can borrow the bike.

I'm 5' 9.5'' tall / 32'' inseam, and ride a medium '05 stumpy 120 (which I think is similar in size to the epic). Fits me perfectly; and better to go a little small than a little large, if you ask me.

FYI I use a 54cm specialized allez on the road. And I think there are many previous discussions on fit for guys our height, at least on the Stumpy.

I'm 5'11", 32 or 34 inseam, ride a size medium Cannondale hardtail. The size large Epic fits me, but I find it a hair tight in terms of reach.

i'm 5' 8" with 31.5" inseam and ride a medium. fits me ok; i get maybe two inches of standover clearance. the medium would work best for you unless you have ape-arms. the epic is a twitchy bike as you noted. but if the large feels better, then by all means...

I'm 5'10" with a 33" inseam and a MEDIUM fits me perfectly. I've been riding a 2003 Epic disk for two full years without any issues related to fit.

And I am 5'11"ish (1.80m) and I ride a Large with a 110mm stem. My inseam is also 32" (without shoes).

If possible try a Large, I love mine.

Cheers,
Cris

i'm between 5'11" and 6', 34" and have a large as well. The medium just didn't seem to have enough room, but I also was just a hair under getting the large sized up properly without changing out the post to something that allowedthe seat to be moved a bit forward.

If it comes down to having a bike that fits for two people, then that plays a big role, but if this is a primary for you, go to a shop that can size you up properly (IMO).

5'10 w. 34" inseam...

I have a Large '05 FSRxc Pro. In retrospect, it's a little big for my taste. I put on a 90mm stem, which helped. But, I am fairly long-legged, so it is still a bit of a reach to the bars. It really only shows when trying to gain some leverage (I'm a skinny wimp and need all I can get!).

I was newly returning to cycling when I the shop ordered my rig for me. It was stupid to take someone' word for it, I know. But, I thought I could trust the "experts". Needless to say, they aren't my shop of choice anymore.

Best advice is to test-ride (like I DIDN'T) and see what feels best.

Final Decision

With the 06 Epic I really could have gone either way. But based on knee over the crank as the first measurement, the Large fit better. It's a slight reach, but I can either change the stem or change to a riser bar if I decide it's a problem.

The main reason I went with the large is because the front end stays down so much better. I was always fighting to keep the front wheel on the ground with the medium - not so with the large.

It's funny though. I'd go in one shop and the guy would swear that I needed a large. Another shop would swear that I needed a medium.

No one seems to use the measurement systems that are prevalent for the road bikes.
