I am looking at a Specialized Hardrock Comp - it seems nice
but the parts seem a little low end for $500
is that the best I can do?

$500 is my budget and I might swing $550 - but that would be it

any other bikes that are a good ride for a semi heavy guy doing all types of mountain / trail riding?

suggestions?
I do not mind doing some research if I can get a good quality bike in my budget

This bike is probably very similar to a Specialized Hardrock in terms of weight and geometry, except its components are much much better.

Of the two, I'd pick the Warrior. Excellent deal at $500.00. Not crazy about the fork they put on it, but it's a heck of a lot better than some fork offerings on bikes in this price range.

Local dealers told me that nicer bikes are made in Taiwan and cheaper ones in China
In fact, both the Giant and Speicialized dealer said their cheap bikes were from China
and their higher level ones were from Taiwan

Everything is practically made in Taiwan nowadays.. bikes from china.. possibly the hardrock. I know i have a 1999 hardrock frame that was made in china.

Iron horse is most definately taiwan.

I found out the Ibex I was looking at is made in China
and one dealer here told me Iron Horse was from China
I wrote to online seller of Iron Horse and ask but they did not answer

I know nicer level bikes in shops here are from Taiwan

Mabye thats true or its not true, but it really doesn't matter as long as the welds are good.
You have to get rid of all presumptions when you enter mtbr forums, i came into these forums thinking 26 inch was a size of bike and that full suspension for $150 at walmart was good lol.

I wanted to find out about Iron Horse bikes and could not get an answer from rscott
So I did a search and found performancebike sells these and I called them.

They put me thru to the 'tech dept' and the guy told me the 'warrior expert' is made in China and that most Iron Horses are from China. He said 'only the upper end super nice expensive stuff is from Taiwan'

This is basicly what the Specialized and Giant dealers told me.

Do you have a Gary Fisher Dealer in town? If so The Marlin (whick I have) can be had for under 500 and the Piranha for not much more. I am really happy with mine for the price.

^^ I called around my dealers and the only thing they have on closeout is a Trek 6500 non disc version for $560 plus tax.
Pretty ok, I'm fine with the no discs, but the fork is manitou axel elite and it has some low end shimano cranks. -.-

I have a Giant Yukon which I paid $430 for the 2006 model and am very happy with it. You can probably get some great deals on last years Giant/Specialized/Trek, etc at your LBS.

I think the Ibex Alpine is made in China; as Ibex told me the bikes were from China

And please use those little smily face symbols with care; they seem childish and detract from the point you are making
