3rd El Paso Puzzler 50 miler

1118 Views 12 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  fastmtnbiker33w
Just over a month away. I forgot to post anything here earlier as we've been super occupied building new trail for the course.

I'm pretty sure this is one of the toughest 50's around. Last year's course was easier with more dirt road and the winner was just under 6 hours. This year's course has more singletrack and more climbing. A new venue means more fun before and after the event as we'll have a circus tent, keg, and bonfire! You can camp all three nights for free.

Jan 17th, 8 am. 50 mile for the ones who nut up and 35 for the rest, but they'll get plenty of punishment as well.

Travis Brown has signed up and Evan Plews has his airline ticket.

Get out of the snow and test your skills and your fitness level! $40 and free camping....you can't go wrong.

El Paso is getting an unusual winter out of it's system with the 4th major winter storm hitting us today (a record). If we get the 55 degree weather or better for MLK weekend, the trails are going to be rippin' fast.

Even if it rains, our trails rip when wet! Come get some warm(er) weather and some sick riding in.

I spoke with my relatives down there just the other day. They were scratching their heads over the recent weather. Crazy stuff!

I wish I was going to be there for your event. I love those trails and they are tough! But I won't be down again until spring break, so I'll have to make do riding them then!

Nothing crazy about it. It's probably due to having been told about global warming for so long, we've forgotten that winters are often cold/wet. The Rockies and the Southwest are experiencing stereotypical el nino weather patterns, which happens every 4 to 12 years. It's been awhile since we've experienced a strong el nino winter, so folks have forgotten what it's like. To listen to some folks you'd think the apocalypse was upon us. We're in for a wet winter. No big deal.

Well, I am only relating what life long El Pasoans are telling me. ;) :D

As for winter, I know all about that. (Life long Iowan)

Back on topic: Will the route the Puzzler takes be open to ride later in March? (Wondering if it is all public lands) If not, I know another route I can try in the State Park.

Hope the event goes well! :D
Ted,

Don't know if you'll be flying into the EP area in March, but if you're driving through the area you just gotta adjust your route to go through Amarillo and take a half day or so to ride the trails at Palo Duro Canyon. Well worth it.

I'll be driving.

I've taken that route before and have seen the signs to Palo Duro. I'll take that into consideration. Thanks!

Normally I go all the way down HWY 54 these days, so that would be a bit outta the way.

The course is entirely inside the state park and is accessible from the east side before and after park hours. March is a great time to ride here.

Don't "take it into consideration", DO IT! Trust me, no matter what changes you make in your trip plans to accommodate the side trip, it will be worth it.

You can get some info at www.oldtascosacycling.com (nope, I'm not affiliated with the club) or www.palodurocanyon.com I am not a widely travelled mtb'er, so I won't try to compare the trails to anything anyone might recognize, but I made a side trip down there on a road trip and went back for the Palo Duro Canyon Marathon in November. Loved it, highly recommend it. The Old Tascosa folks will surely agree with me. Speaking of the club, you could contact Karie or any of the rest of the crew that promoted the marathon, they're great folks and would love to have you come down, ride their trails, and maybe even write a review. You can find their contact info on the forum pages of the club website.

It's remote at best, but I *may* have work in Las Cruces on Friday. Hope to work it your way and show up at the start line. Will you be taking same day registrations?
NO SAME DAY REGISTRATION! You can register Saturday at packet pickup at the Bowen Ranch Round House between 12:30 and 4:30.
Awesome turnout from all over. 3 from Louisiana, 1 from maryland, a handfull of coloradoans who finally ended the colorado shutout, and 2 from the west coast.

Lots of pics taken by Chris Oaxaca from the new trail are here.

With 140 participants this year, we'll probably cap it at 300 with priority given to 50 milers for next year. There were a lot of doubters before this race.....none after.
