I'm sure that has a lot to do with it too. I can say I have a back-to-back comparison between a buddy's AM 26er and my new 27.5(not the same manufacturer but quite similar HA and cockpit) and I still notice a difference. FWIW, I kept my 26" ht and I do still enjoy it, but for me, all things being equal if I had money to buy the same bike in 26 or 650B, I'd go with the slightly larger wheel. It does seem like the tyre choices are catching up. I love choice. It's a great time to be back in VTT.
Why not own both, or two wheel sizes. I have an ASR5 and a TransAM 29. They are both fun as hell and I'm not sure that I can say either is "better". I had a Ragley Blue Pig a few years ago and that bike beat the ever living sh!t out of me. Not sure that I'd invest in another 26 HT but I love my ASR5.
Now that 29 FS geo is evolving, I may like the way they handle but I don't see a need to drop the Yeti and get something new.
