Currently running 2.3 High Roller and 2.25 Ardent on the HT.

I moved them over from the FS but want something with maybe a bit more width and volume. Maybe 2.4-2.5.

My rides start on tarmac, then a mix of smooth bridle paths, muddy tracks and some faster trails with more roots than rocks. I’m not an aggressive rider, look for the faster smoother routes than the more technical drops etc.

So tyres kind of need to be a jack of all trades. I know this leads to a compromise but would almost like an all season set up.

so probably more grippy front and faster rolling rear with enough volume to give the old back side a bit of extra cushion.

if you made it this far… thank you!

I run 2.5 Assguy up front and 2.3 Aggressor rear. Before that 2.3 DHF up front. Those are slow combos, especially up front, but I don’t want to wash out. Aggressor is pretty good in dry.

Lots of folks like Forekaster as a lighter and faster tire with decent grip. A couple bikes spec that F/R.

I also like what I’ve heard about Vitoria Martello and Mazza.

Wondering about Forekasters. I see they come in 2.6. Would that be ok on 29mm internal width rims?

will have a look at the Vittoria ones.

I think the consensus is that 2.6 on 29 id is borderline but ok. If anything they might require a bit more air so as not to be squirmy. They would also have a pretty rounded profile. Please note I am a novice so apt to make mistakes, but that is how I understand it.

From my own research it seems better to go with a moderate traction 2.3" tire at the rear and a front tire with a more traction tread design and 2.4 or 2.5 inch width.

For my hardtail I am switching from a Rekon Race 2.3 at the rear to a slightly grippier Rekon at the rear. I also have a DHR II in 2.3 and a DHR 2.4 WT and trying to decide which to use on the rear wheel of my FS bike to replace a Purgatory 2.3 tire.

A concern I had with the High Roller II was reports of problems with sidewall cuts that destroyed relatively new tires.

For a fair compromise between rolling speed and traction my vote is for Rekon rear, DHRII in front both in 2.4. This is my favorite combo for long summer rides where the rolling speed of the Rekon really shines. I like maxxterra front dual compound rear for that setup.

If you find yourself needing more beef you can always rotate the DHRII to the back and put something even more aggressive on the front (like DHF, Assegai, Shorty).
