Heading to Moabs for a few day with a couple friends and we're going to rent some bikes. I ride a hardtail rocky Mountain 26" right now, mostly XC in Central California hardpack. I want to rent a 29er Santa Cruz but am hesitant since I've never ridden one before. Is it too big a learning curve to handle while attempting to ride Moab/unknown territory for the first time? Should I stick with what I'm comfortable with? Seeking all advice, thanks!:)

It's a bike, get on it and ride. There is very little learning curve if any at all from 26 to 29 other than trusting the traction. There is more, even if you don't think there is.

Any time you ride an unfamiliar bike you will have to get used to how it handles. Doesn't matter what size wheels it has. I prefer to ride my own bikes because I know what to expect, but if you want to rent a different bike to see if you might like to buy it later, that's a good way to try one out.

After 3 minutes on the 29er, you will wonder what you were worried about. Go for it and I doubt you will be disappointed. ENjoy!

I agree with the 2 post above, got my 29er from the UPS truck put it together and went for a ride, Man, what a ride. Better than my 26er. Just do it you wont be sorry. I hope to go to Moab in Oct, can't wait and you have FUN

I made the switch from a 26" to 29" recently. The biggest thing I had to get accustomed to was the geometry of a 140mm trail bike (26") vs a 100mm hardtail racey bike (29"). It took about 2 miles.

Just be prepared......you will want to ditch the Rocky Mountain and get a 29er.

29'ers pick up speed faster and roll over obstacles better. these are my observations based on personal experience with a KHS solo one 29'er.
