About to buy my first bike. Narrowed it down to either Cannondale Trail SL 29'er 2 or the Specialized rockhopper expert 29'er. The Cannondale shop is a local shop and offers free lifetime tuneups and has much better customer service. Both bikes are priced about the same. Most of the components look to be the same with the exception of the fork.

Any help/comparisons of the two bikes?

Ride 'em both. If that doesn't point to a clear winner, go with the shop that gives you good service.

I have ridden them both and they ride the same to me. I guess the real question is whether the components are comparable or if one stands out above the other?

When buying a bike keep in mind the frame is the most important part of it. Components will wear out, get damaged, etc... Go for the best frame for you and the shop that you trust.

I was in the same both at the end of the day Cannondale just felt better (but both were close). My buddy who helped me choose it said that picking the bike that feels best is usually the smartest move as component can be replaced upgraded but the feel usually will stay.

thank I am leaning towards the cannondale. I am going to see if I can take it on an extended test ride today.
