Has anyone done any work to lighten a fisher fs 29er?
What kind of wights can I expect, stock and non-stock?
Mostly I'd be using a frame and buildign it up from scratch and selling most of the other parts.
Thanks all

What size?

I love talking about my boat anchor two niners. May as well take my clothes off and show the weight of my XL fully as well.... :D

I've got an XL 2004 Sugar 293 frame just waiting around for the wheelset to arrive. I wrote the weight down of the frame somewhere when I weighed it alone right out of the box from "Nate's Custom Shop in Arkansas", but cannot find that sheet of paper at the moment where I wrote it down. I could get everything off of it except for the headset to get the weight of the XL frame, but not until the weekend as I am booked solid with work this week.

Regardless, after I mounted it up to a Marzocchi MX Pro ETA fork with a Chris King headset, a 120mm stem, several spacers and a Salsa seatpost collar - I did weigh it again and I wrote that number down.. That portion of the build weighs in at 5433 grams according to my weighing machine. That's a hair or two under 12 pounds. I'm shooting for 28.43 pounds total weight according to my Excel sheet with everything entered on it, but we shall see what it weighs all put together and off the Excel sheet. That weight includes wheelset components, Bonty tires, WTB tubes, Avid rotors, Avid mechanicals, Bonty post, Titec saddle, Oury grips, XT crankset/BB, Salsa skewers, Xpedio stainless steel pedals, Next Low Riser carbon bar, SRAM cassette and chain and it doesn't really matter if I use XT or SRAM X.9 rear derailleur and shifters as the weight comes in about the same.

I could have saved 200 grams on a lighter fork choice, but "C'est la vie". I went for the custom wheelset where I saved those couple hundred grams instead. I couldn't afford to do both with price being the operative word on the fork and I've already shed 8 pounds off the rider's weight with more on the way.

White Brothers lists their BW .8 at 3.4 pounds and the BW 1 at 3.9 pounds. The Marzocchi's hover in the upper end of that range from 3.8 (Marathon) to 4.3 (MX Comp) pounds.

293 owner here...

Gary Fisher says their stock 293 [large] comes in at around 29.5 lbs - I called.

After some gram crunching I found that 26lbs is about as low as you're going to go if you: 1)intend on keeping 4inches of travel and 27speeds
2)don't go SUPER CRAZY OVER-THE-TOP WEIGHT WEENIE
3)don't have a few grand to spend on your bike
4)don't have access to unreleased 100mm White Brothers air forks

Good Luck :)

Running carbon riser bars, eggbeaters, CK headset, and other carbon fiber parts and ti bolts, my medium 2003 292 weighed in at.... (drumroll please) 29.5 lbs...

yeah, i was running avid discs which didn't help in the weight dept, but sure stopped awfully nice!

26lbs could probably be possible, but that would involve a LOT of 2003 xtr stuff, stans, and a carbon fiber seatpost.

292 weight

I ride a size medium '03 292. full xtr w/discs, marathon sl, racelite rear wheel, race front, easton carbon post, and flat bar, wcs stem, manitou rear shock, acx tires, 959's and am sitting at 27.2 lbs. I have a WB .8 on the way and that should drop it into the 26 and change range. still not "light" but it did make a few pro friends of mine cringe when we weighed their 26" fs "team" bikes and they were only about half a pound less.

my 04 292 weighs 28.5 and it's a size large. I put an easton monkey lite, sram x-9 shifters, X-0 r. derailluer, Bontrager racelite post and hope mono mini's on it. Oh yea and it's rides awsome, I don't understand why everybody is such a fisher hater.

For some reason I have got the impression that many pro racers don't have true weight weenie bikes. Maybe some of them once started off with no-compromise weight shaving, and then piece by piece have put on other parts for fit and function reasons, ending up in the weight region just above the feather-class?

That's a serious weightweenie 293, at 25.44 lbs! I guess you have been thinking how that '05 BW 1.0 would cut the last 200 g (down to 25 lbs sharp)? Would be nice to see a picture of that bike. Are those Ritchey Rock Pro phased-out road rims?

the rims are the trekking-version at 520gram, they are extrastiff, have enough withd for all tires and are riden by almost 2 years without any problems
further investments would/could be:
tune crankset/specialites chainringes & tune ti bb => - 150g
wb-fork => - 400g
schmolke carbon-handlebar => -50
the 11000g-scale is magical :D :D
