24h rims on 36h hubs?

I have a set of Shimano XT AM wheels and the rear hub has some play. The rims are 24h, but I would like to switch to 36h Saint hubs... Will this work?

Yes, it works. But reusing rims is not ideal if they are well used.

I would start by rebuilding the hubs. They are serviceable.
